It’s not anymore? Or maybe my definition was different than commonly understood. I always thought of it as Kansas/Nebraska going East to through Ohio.

NYC does have a certain third world charm these days.

The homeless population hasn’t changed much in DC, the difference is that the local government lifted the rules a bit on encampments because they didn’t want hundreds of (presumably less than healthy) people cramped together in homeless shelters during Covid.
To the other point, this has been used on and off over the years, protestors use it sometimes, in fact the occupy Wall Street folks kind of started the trend in 2012. The city will clear it if it becomes a public health or safety hazard, as they have done with other places around town. In fact I think the occupy folks got booted at one point.

Side note, I used to work about 2 blocks from there, it’s a nice park and nice area. And way back then in the 90’s it had zero homeless as a permanent fixture, though some did congregate around the metro station there.

The same people claiming that NYC is third world will, in another context, decry how expensive it is to live there, seemingly without a sense of the irony.

Bingo. What struck me was the complete absence of any empathy or compassion. I always wonder how such people must have been raised to act so cold and put upon.

I think it takes a certain level of self awareness and life experiences to appreciate irony.

When did squatting on public roads and public lands become legal?

Great point. The homeless should be put in jail, including the little ones.

Lol... you went from zero to dumb pretty fast there... No one said to put them in jail. But at the same time we cannot have a society that lets people just live on the side of roads or on public land where ever and when every the want to.

They’re homeless. Would you be able to house a homeless family of 5? That would be a good start.

We have shelters... Make more if we are low on space. But there needs to be something done instead of just letting them squat where every they want to.
