    Dexter disappeared against USF.

    Read that one more time.

Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane. Then celebrates routine tackles.

A lot of that going around. Oddly not just our team too.

Was that an up to date projection? Most projections I have seen were pre season. He would need a monster rest of the year to remain in the first round.

    SIAP...

    Why? It is really simple.

We had Dumbo and Associates teaching and nurturing them. And to the freshmen, they usually aren't developed (physically or mentally) enough to play well in major college football.

Based off his current stat line he is a day 2/3 draft pick.

    17 tackles 7 solo .5 sack and 1 deflection 1 int.

For his career he has only managed 3 sacks
    _____________

Went back and looked at Jordan Davis's numbers and they really weren't much different. His senior year..
    32 tackles, 17 solo, 5 for loss, 2 sacks, 1 PD.
    7 career sacks.
He seemed so much more dominant than GD looks.

Combination of undisciplined and poor gap filling.

DL often leaves their gap, LBs generally scrape poorly, and our SS isn’t there.

Despite that being that entirety of run defense the fix straight forward. Upgrade in talent in a couple spots and improved coaching (or bad habit removal) for a few guys.

Sometimes I feel people think football players are robots out there and coaches are the programmers. If only it were that simple.

Anyone who has ever coached can tell you some pick up on concepts and techniques very quickly while others you can tell them 1000 times and it won’t stick until the 1001st time for whatever reason.

We have a bunch of guys that are still having to think about assignments before reacting rather than instinctually knowing what to do which comes with repetition. In other words, they’re not able to play fast. It compounds the problem when they are slow to read the play AND didn’t get the assignment right.

It also doesn’t help we have to play guys in positions they are simply not suited to. Burney is a very good athlete, but ILB is not a good fit for him, for example. Just my opinion…

Good summary - I think we have good teachers on staff and hopefully it will start clicking with some guys.

You jest but that's accurate. I find it hard to believe our talent is so bad that we can't do anything well. We are bad against the run and the pass....

Guys, most of these players were here for spring, fall and we're into 5 games and the D remains ugly. I've never seen a uf D this bad other than Samford game which by then I think the team gave up. Say we have average talent on D, does that excuse UT having no punts, qb hitting on over 80% passing, well over 500 yards without their best wr? Does that account for EW gaining well over 400 yards, their qb hitting the first 10 of ll passes, and them running through our DL like we were a jv team? How is this not part of coaching? How is this not part of the coaches teaching discipline when players make same mistakes over and over. It was said in a press conference that our D would be simple enough to stop our D from having to think, no grey areas, just play. Yet, players who keep making same mistakes play and the D remains as it is. Like most of you, I do not anticipate things getting much better if any if at this point in the season we look the same. Maybe its just me, and I've been watching UF play since the early 60s, but I can't recall a D this bad. I know we have to recruit better I get it. I know we have to go to the portal for instant help, I get it. But the way our D has played or not played these past 2 games, something else is missing beyond poor talent.

We have been in a base D with lots of cushion. I suspect we've been practicing this base all spring, fall and 5 games now. I could be very wrong but if our guys aren't getting it, doesn't some blame fall on the coaches?

The only other option is that these coaches know this is a lost year and so they are reinforcing the base D to familiarize younger players for preparation for next year when they will add some new wrinkles. Perhaps its clear to them, our coaches are no dummies, that there isn't real talent on the D at all, so this year its take our lumps and train younger players for being better next year.

Although I hate it, I'm reconciled to seeing bad D the rest of the year. Heck, I'm even concerned about Vandy's running qb against us. Hopefully our O will be the difference maker in upcoming games.

Gap control. Don’t think we have had a semi-effective run stopping DT since Kyrie Campbell departed. Dexter has been a disappointment. Slaton was not effective at UF, but is playing better for the Packers.

Coaching and scheme? Can we really be so talent deficient? I can understand not being deep, but not talented? Feels like staff isn't getting much out of the D team. Whose idea was it to allow our DEs to be sealed out of plays vs Tennessee? And once you see the damage, don't you make adjustments?

The gaps South Florida had to run through were unbelievable.

I'll bet the right coach/es could make our defense better. It's starts with getting the right players and play calls on the field. After that, change the crappy defensive scheme our DC has in place... it sucks profusely.

Has anyone really researched our DC and what he's done in college football? I'd like the gist on his experience and rankings.

The frustrating thing to me, the cupcake teams seem to have better discipline than us… after a few years one c
Not to mention no star teams running well coached schemes.
Maybe our guys were just broken. Simple assignments

He did great with his 2 years as DC at Louisiana. Gotta like improvement year to year.

Urban took his guys from BG to Utah to UF.

But I agree that the SEC is tough. Napier needs to start thinking big with his assistants.

Maybe Napier needs to be more hands on like Meyer was? I'd like to see Napier take over the special teams... or the game-changer position.

Lol... I have no problem with Napier figuring it all out. I just hope he sees and fixes it before we start seeing our recruits leave for other teams. We already have some verbal commitments visiting other teams. Napier has to stop the defensive "bleeding" soon.
