Tennessee is issuing mandatory new license plates. There are 2 types: Ones that have the words In God We Trust in small type at the bottom and ones that don't. People are reporting getting side eye at the tag offices for picking the latter.

However, there is another difference. One set starts with letters and the other starts with numbers. The state claims this is to have enough combinations for the state but it isn't necessary for a population just shy of 7 million.

Since these have been adopted, people are seeing social media posts saying things like, "nice to see so many god fearing people in XXXXX (town) these days." This is based on whether or not the plate starts with letters or numbers.

What is the state's compelling interest in identifying their citizens this way?

My guess would be White Christian Nationalism. A foretaste of the coming white-power theocracy, compliments of what is still called the Republican Party.

Tennessee has a long history of this kid of stuff. It's one reason we like to make fun of UT football fans.

But the writing is all over the walls for the future of America. This is just one pathetic "writing"..

There is no reason the license plates couldn't randomly have either numbers or letters first regardless of type of plate.

What a dip-shit of a state. Can’t believe the Gators lost to those morons.

It's a glorified vanity plate. I guarantee that each side would flip out if its preferred version were banned.

So which are more glorious? Letters or numbers?

    I'm confused.

Are we saying people need the numbers to ID if the plate says "In God We Trust" instead of simply reading the "in God We Trust" part?

Why does it matter? It literally has the phrase or it doesnt.

    (Tennessee literacy jokes notwithstanding;))

So the implication is if you choose not to get the "In God We Trust" plate you must be one of the radical leftist communist pedophiles who hates America?

For one thing, it says the "in God We Trust" is in small print, but having the letter/number makes it more obvious ... also, a plate border could be used to hide it either way...

I mean this isnt uncommon. In NC we have different letter number combos based on various plate types. The phrase on all of those can be covered up by a plate frame.

This one cant though. It's dead center on the plate. It can not be covered up.

Some folks need to just say the quiet part out loud and say they dont like the "God" part.

I know if you choose a custom plat, like a Gator plate, their are default letter combinations, but this isn’t a custom plat. People are forced to choose if they want god on their standard license plate or not. You can’t cover up your choice with a plate frame if the letter combination makes it obvious. And beleive it or not, a quick Google search shows that, for some reason, Tennessee is making the data public as to which counties have the highest and lowest “god” plates percentages ….

Typical of that toothless state. There is no good reason to go out of your way to publicly identify people by religious preference.

To borrow a poorly used argument for a certain other topic...

"If you dont like it... Dont get one."

They should have a third option: Hail Satan 666

Seriously though, not sure what the controversy is. Florida has the same deal, you have 3 standard options for a plate, either "In God we trust", "Sunshine State" or "Your County".

these aren't vanity plates, these are standard issue and all should have the same format. perhaps it is the easily definable difference between the two that people don't like. perhaps they are fearful of being identified as someone who doesn't worship your god and that would influence authorities' decision making process.
