Sorry but this will be a long read. The only way we can get those days back is to be patient, which is not a Gator fan virtue. I understand the frustration because we all endure it. I don’t know how old some are on here but I remember being excited about Spurrier coming to UF. Even though Emmitt Smith declared early we were pumped. It made for some interesting games for sure. But getting our rears kicked up in Tennessee twice had some fans wondering if he was the right guy. Obviously not as loud as fans are today with roaring their disappointment. But patience in the early 90s turned into dominance. And Spurrier could put some classes together too. If that guy didn’t really like to recruit then I can only imagine if he did. I feel optimistic about Napier. I’ll admit that I did with Mullen too. Mullen’s offenses were hard to scheme against with the right personnel. Lord knows what happened to our defense. And recruiting? I used to defend Mullen until that WR we had withdrew his commitment and committed to UGA. From that guys story it was evident that our recruiting was lazy and not organized. It makes since now looking back at it. We would have guys committed to UF who were among the best in the nation but we could never hang on to them. And Mullen’s staff forgot recruits names. That’s unacceptable. I get a feeling we have a confident coach who can be humble and learn from things. And I get it. Bubble screens, especially to the short side of the field, suck. Our adjustments at halftime seem to benefit our opponents more than us. But there are similarities to this team and the Spurrier teams that went into Knoxville on 90 and 92 and got owned. Spurrier tasted success early in his tenure here but that was a different era with an offensive revolution in the SEC because of him. Napier may not wow people but in time he could have UF as a top 5 school nationally on a consistent basis.
You are confusing two topics. Number one point I am trying to make was 80% of Dade County is made up with hispanic, spanish, latino, Cuban American peoples. What ever name or label you wish but this is a fact. They believe the first wave of Cubans kind of built Miami. Number two, opening news conference, Cristobal spoke Spanish to connect with the Cuban American families and Latino families. "It can't be ignored how significant it is for both Cuban community and former Miami players, that one of their own is leading the charge.
I try to give the benefit of the doubt for most people. I'm assuming he mentioned it in the fact that Miami thought they had their perfect guy for the program in all aspects. He did bring his ethnicity up in his press conference as part of the whole boy comes home story they were pushing when he was hired. Maybe poorly worded and maybe I'm wrong altogether but that's how I took it.
Interesting that he brought up the boy comes home story since that was the same exact story that the coach he was replacing had....
Uhhh... minor ethnicity lesson, mister know it all, major pain in the bum. Miami has a large Latin population. And a very large Cuban population. I happen to like Miami's Latin population (And I hate to generalize with "latin" because the Brazilians there speak Portuguese). However, it cannot be denied that Miami has a huge Latin population and Cristobal is a Cuban native son, which is probably why he got the job. In fact, I guarantee that is why he got the job.
Gainesville has a large white population, a very large white population. It cannot be denied that Gainesville has a large white population and Billy Napier is a white guy from the South, which is probably why he got the job. In fact, I guarantee that is why he got the job. See, I can play that stupid ignorant game too.
Thinking with a little feed back from my Cuban American friends. Mario is going to be successful. He is hard working, devoted and great at recruiting. I will leave the Latino equation out from now on. I might have not been looking at the big picture.
Side note on the Canes and Mario being a Latin coach so they’ve found their man topic… manny Diaz wasn’t Latin? Lol
Mario and Manny are Hispanic or Cuban Americans. Manny is the son of the former Mayor who was or is Hispanic. Latino or Latina are people that are born or live in S America, Central America or Mexico.
Getting this thread back on track with an MTSU Google review from someone who has livestock relatives? "We park our RV at the Livestock Center so we can visit family, while in town. We love George and Bob, the campus bus drivers. They always make us feel welcome. We especially love Bonnie, who does a fabulous job of managing the lot. She is very professional and kind. Our son graduated from MTSU quite a few years ago, so we have invested $$$$$ in this college. "
Trust me, I get all that. I lived in Miami for 10 years and SFla for 35. I wasnt really debating, just putting out some numbers. I found the UM student body numbers interesting. I know Cristobal is hispanic and a former Cane coming home, so fans are/were excited. Of course, they were also excited to see Manny Diaz as HC, who was also hispanic, a Miami guy and son of the former mayor. Before that they were excited to see Mark Richt as the savior, a former Cane and successful HC come to town. No real point I guess, but at some point heritage doesnt matter, you have to win.
