I’m not defending the OP because… why?
But I do find irony that Cleveland changed its baseball teams name so as to not offend and then gets called out for having players … some of which where black… some of which were not… dressed like inmates with “guardians” around them..maybe wardens? I don’t know. But there was several articles about how it was racists to have the black players dress up like inmates… people were offended by the photo and the team got called out.
They can’t get out of their own way.
Truth is.. just about everything will offend someone somewhere today and social media allows everyone a loud enough voice to be heard.

The 'guardians' name comes from some art deco architecture in the city, it has nothing to do with the carceral system

Sounds like they picked a dumb team name. Art is for suckers and libbies.

Maybe in 100 years people will revere it as much as people do with teams named after the color of their socks

Thank you for posting this. You couldn't possibly know this, but it's right on time with something I'm dealing with and it was beyond heartening to find something like this here on Too Hot of all places.

    Much respect to you

I believe it's an homage to the iconic statues on the bridge adjacent to the stadium.

I attended a Carolina Panthers game last year vs the then Washington Football Team. Dorkiest name ever. Any sport. Anywhere in the world. Anytime in history.

Anyway, Washington fans were there in abundance. All of them were wearing Redskins gear. All of them cheering “Redskins!”

It’s an opportunity to sell more jerseys. Both with the new name and the traditional one.

Are the Guardians still selling Jim Thome jerseys and other Indians legacy memorabilia? Seems that would trigger the folks who stuck a fork in Chief Wahoo to begin with.

I have been a Braves fan for over 50 years. I remember chief Nokahoma sitting in his teepee in right field. He was a drunk and I liked him when I was 7 but as an adult he was offensive as hell.

It is not unusual for MLB teams to change names or any sports team for that matter. Reasons are varied but be assurded evey name change comes with the intent of putting fans in the seats. The question is from a monetary srandpoint did revenues increase or decrease?

Guardians join list of MLB name-changers
Cleveland's new name will be the Guardians, the franchise announced on Friday, as it will replace the "Indians" moniker for the new one following the conclusion of the 2021 season.

It’s a momentous decision, one brought about by protests over sports teams’ use of Indigenous names and symbols. It’s also one with plenty of precedent, as franchises throughout baseball history have made such changes for a number of different reasons.

So you are a Braves fan, but are so triggered by this that you have changed your avatar to a mockup of the Cleveland Guardians logo? How about this: if sports are an escape from the awfulness of the real world, we don't utilize imagery meant to invoke the awfulness of the real world? That way, the people who support the awfulness (or at least who want to pretend like it isn't there) and those that oppose it can both not focus on it while watching a sports team.

Disney and ESPN are trying their level best to politicize sports. But I totally agree with your thoughts above.

Wrong. Art is for intellectuals and people who seek something exceptional in life. It's for the curious and those who seek cultivation and enrichment, intellectually and spiritually. Art is for the young and old, the rich and the poor, the meek and the proud, conservatives and liberals. Disenfranchising oneself from the arts leads to an emptier existence. But there's still time for ya, Bluke. Dip your toes in. Even you can find some enrichment from the arts.

I do enjoy the arts, but finding people to impress with my superior if only extremely recently acquired knowledge of the artist/period/style while consuming the proper wine and cheese and comparing cars and clothing is not a necessary part of the experience, especially if the artist never enjoyed such accoutrements.
