    Congrats to you. My mother had high blood pressure , type II diabetes and Graves’ disease-and she was very thin. I remember her having eye surgery at North Shore Hospital on Long Island in the late 1980’s where they literally drilled bone structure out of her skull to make room for the muscles around her eye, which kept expending and risked choking off her optic nerves.

    yeah exercise not only sheds weight, but it’s one of the best remedies for Anxiety.
    And anxiety can cause sleeplessness, which can cause dietary changes (as can comfort eating). Which can mean weight gain for some. Weight gain means less desire/ability to exercise, which further harms your mental health. So it becomes a large feedback loop.
    My one piece of advice would be not to focus solely on your target weight (as admirable as it is) but being healthy. It’s good to have goals, but one is a number that could make you less motivated if you reach it, the other is a way of life, and far more likely to stick.

    on the subject of hiking, I post about my hikes a lot, but the single biggest benefit I get from them isn’t the exercise (which had me with a BP of 115/67 in the dentists chair where I am generally anxious), the sense of accomplishment when I climb something, the amazing views I always enjoy, being in nature…it’s the stress relief. When I am stressed now in my life, my first instinct is to hike. When I start the hike I might feel awful, and generally it gets worse for the first 20 or 30 minute as it all bubbles up, but it has in order to to get out so there actually some comfort there. After 45 minutes or an hour I am rarely anything but serene again. It’s like a magic tonic with all the great side benefits.
    I think everyone who finds their peaceful place is far better off for it.

    I always tell my Diabetic patients numbers don’t lie and you A1C is a testament to that.

    Sounds like we have been down similar paths. We both have type II diabetes, you have a hyperactive thyroid I have a hypoactive thyroid. I wasn't quite as big as you but I lost from 275 down to 190 just before I retired. My goal was to hike the AT when I retired but my failure broke my spirit and I have since shot back up to 250. I have the added problem of being a 50 year smoker, my doctor has always said I had COPD but it never got to me until the last year or so. I could never climb a mountain today.

    Anyway keep up the good work and don't let anything break your spirit.

    Can I ask your age? I'm in mid 40s and have high BP and diabetic as well. I grew up addicted to working out but it was tough to motivate once I got in the real world. I also eat and drink too much in addition to sitting at my desk all day. I lost a lot of weight years back through Medi Weight loss with a low carb diet. I felt really good but had the benefit of an appetite suppressant and didn't keep the weight off after I quit taking the pill; in fact, I've gained more over the years. I feel like I might be okay if I could make it past the first couple weeks, but getting started is always difficult. My doctor's bad news and warnings don't even have the same effect they used to have.

    Congrats on your continued progress! Look forward to following, and maybe you will help inspire a couple others on here.

    I applaud anyone willing to tackle obesity and the health issues that come with it. There's a reason you don't see a lot of obese older folks. If you need motivation, nothing will lead you to an early grave quicker.

    My wife has probably now spent more money on continuing education than at UF and her DMD. That focus has been huge in our continued effort to provide the best dental care possible and provide more for our patients than our peers do. With that the Dawson Academy has been a major influence in this quest.

    While "The Shift" is more of a technical book for those working on the clinical side of dentistry. It can still be a valuable read for the rest of us. Especially the first third of the book. It eventually gets into the weeds for those of us not in the clinical side on a daily basis. But it brings to light some of the major problems not only in our health care system but with health as a whole for people. There are references to other things that are huge for patient health as a whole. Not just dental. We are so excited about shifting to Integrative Dentistry. Not because it will help separate us from our peers. But because of the life change it can provide for our patients.

    Honestly, I wasn't phishing for praise but it feels nice all the same. And if I've inspired some here, even better! Seriously, I had to make the change. I was heading for a no good, very bad end and was pretty miserable and fearful about it, basically paralyzed by it. I wish I could say I'll be back soon, but I don't know. It's enough to focus on what I set out to accomplish. But this is the way it needs to be. I won't go back.

    @mrhansduck I'm 53 and share many similarities. Indeed, losing weight and regaining it back is the norm, unfortunately. Getting started is hard, but what seems equally hard is lifestyle change in the face of some pretty massive forces that *seem* determined to make failure the norm.

    At some point, I'll come back to address these issues and respond to the many great comments and insights.

    Spend less time here for the mental health side for sure if needed. And we know you were not phishing for praise. We need stories like this. It is how we are going to change healthcare in this country!!!
