Unfortunately, Donald Trump was not president of the United States after noon on January 20,2021 and he had no authority to keep top secret sci documents in his illegal office or storage room. And, Hilary returned the DOD emails. She didn’t lie and claim she had no documents, reflecting criminal intent. Oh— and Trump never declassified these documents. They are marked classified

Possible, but I would argue that this will only rally the Trump bunch in the short term....certainly somewhat dependent on how things play out of course. I could easily see some of the crew start to distance themselves and possibly move toward a Desantis. Trump could also end up bogged down fighting this, or be forced to negotiate some type of plea. Probably too any unknowns at this juncture, but his "political future" will certainly be impacted in some fashion. Will be interesting.

FBI raid gave Trump a 10-point boost over DeSantis, poll shows

Last month, 53 per cent of Republican voters and Republican-leaning independents said they would vote for Mr Trump in the 2024 primary if it was held that day.

Following the raid, it found that number for Mr Trump had climbed to 57 per cent, while support for Mr DeSantis had dropped from 23 per cent down to 17 per cent.

No other Republican candidate had double-digit support.

Mr Trump has not yet officially confirmed he will run again for the White House in two years but is widely expected to do so.

I haven't read the last 60 pages in this thread. Has anyone explained why Trump needed to take 25 boxes of classified materials to his insecure home in a resort community shared with hundreds of people without security clearances???

You don’t really believe all these top secret documents were properly declassified, do you? Make a FOIA request for them, see how it goes….

It doesn't matter what they are marked, the president has supreme authority to declassify anything at any time simply by stating that it's declassified or as apparently in Trump's case having a standing order that anything he takes out of the Oval Office is declassified.

There is no approval process for information declassification that the President of the United States must go through other than to simply declare something declassified.

I know you might not like Trump and I am not a Trump fan but the law is clear on this.

Also Hillary was never president and therefore it doesn't matter what her intent was or wasn't.

The reality is that high level political actors are rarely ever charged over something like this and the idea that a former president can be charged over something like this is just absolutely hilariously absurd.

One day, your guys are not going to be in charge and do you really want the other side coming after your side like this? Be careful what you wish for.

Who does the President have to ask permission from to declassify anything?

    A. Himself
    B. Himself
    or
    C. Himself

Your buying the BS post facto justifications the RNC has been working hard on. There was no automatic declassification policy and even Trump has to let someone know via a process what he declassified.

High level people are rarely charged because they don't lock up classified material in their club's pool room behind a simple padlock after they leave office.

So why did he return an allotment of classified documents under subpoena if he had already declassified them under a “standing order” while he was still president? I’ll hang up and listen.

Clearly others disagree on your legal interpretation of the handling sensitive material, but I am no expert in this area and will abstain from judgement.

However, I am interested in probing your confident declaration that it would be absurd to prosecute someone for something like this. How do we even know what this “this” is? What materials did he have? And for what purpose? If there are no answers to those questions that would change your cavalier attitude to Trump’s actions, I would suggest that you’ve prematurely closed your mind on the matter.

Unlike some here, I believe it very unlikely that Trump was trying to sell national secrets to foreign actors, but I also think the justice department would be certifiably negligent to not at least investigate the motive here.
