FBI Executed a Warrant at Mar a Lago; the Investigation Continues

Regardless of if he could or did declassify them, there is the very important question people should be asking on if he should.

If these documents were considered "Top Secret" there is no reason in hell an exiting President should be declassifying them let alone taking them with him.

 

You're right in the "rush" part, no doubt.

I would however not want those names stay redacted in perpetuity. Government/politicos like to classify a lot of information that has no biz being classified in the first place, which is my big concern.

 

DOJ: “Sir, please give us our classified documents back”

Trump: “I didn’t take anything with me”

DOJ: “Sir, we know you did. Here’s a subpoena for them.”

Trump: “Thanks, I’m just going to ignore that”

DOJ: “sir, here’s a search warrant. We are here to pick up our documents”.

Trump “This was done in darkness, what a witch hunt! Outrageous. I’m such a victim. Why does everyone hate me”

Trump lawyer: “I watched the search in person and the Trump’s watched it all on CCTV from NY. Probably saw it better than I did. “

DOJ: sir, here’s your inventory of what we took. 20 boxes. 11 sets classified items, some top secret, and some other things”.

Trump: “Hey I declassified all that stuff.

DOJ: “Sir, none of the documents were processed and marked declassified, and you don’t have the power to do it now.

Trump: “this is a witch hunt”

 

Yep, I made a similar point. If he declassified then, he is essentially saying they do not contain any sensitive information. The docs are now unclassified according to him and can be read by anyone… even our enemies. I doubt that is the case.

 

It was a fbi raid. Why will it “turn out to be nothing”? It sure doesn’t sound like nothing.

The Espionage Act covers the refusal to return security documents, not just spying.

As @duchen has pointed out, the Espionage Act has many sections regarding classified material. Probable cause showing trump violated the Act does not necessarily mean he committed espionage. Doesn't discount it either.

Whether it's invoking Executive Privilege or declassifying documents, there is a processed involved. It's not a magic wand thing.

Many trump followers latch onto simplistic demagoguery and seek info that provides confirmation bias. Even though they don’t require logic for their personal reasoning, most rationale people do. You really need to provide some basis, backup or justification for these I-follow-trump-no-matter-what-so-fbi-is-wrong posts.

 

I am remembering the Mueller report a bit differently. I recall something more like Mueller would not make a recommendation of action against the president leaving this up for the DOJ to decide. For the determination of obstruction, he also left this open.

Regardless, it is clear the right leaning folk on here mostly considered it a nothing burger and those on the left were convinced he committed a crime. And basically the same is true in reverse for the Hillary server controversy.

 

Maga is supposedly “back the blue”. when it’s convenient. we have Jan 6 and now trump with class docs and it’s a fringe right war on the fbi. Such hypocrisy.

 

Recently checked my FB feed. Many of the people who were raging about the FBI raid earlier this week are now sharing quotes from the bible or Jesus memes. G-d bless them.

 

I don’t really know how to feel about these public official investigations honestly. A former (or current) president and a presidential candidate really shouldn’t be any more above the law than you or I. Then again, the nature of these individuals makes every action for or against them very political seeming from the outside, and the FBI just isn’t wielding the public trust that it seems to have had in the 1950s. Seems like you’d really want to have some cut and dried unclassified evidence to make a move on one of these people.
