Yep, and we're seeing that play out in the landfills with solar panels too. Lot's of nasty toxic elements in those too.

 

In terms of greenhouse gases electric cars are better over the entire lifecycle, and have more upside as the source grid energy gets cleaner.

Hearing that graphene super-capacitors will replace lithium not too far out in the future.

 

Ever seen a list of the toxic, cancer-causing metals and other elements from coal? The cancer-causing VOCs from natural gas? How about nuclear?

Govt: Turn up your AC because the power grid can't hand the draw and you will get blackouts.

Also Govt: Get rid of your car and go electric and charge off the grid.

 

Maybe aoc should change the moniker to only a little bit greener new deal.

 

#1 current battery technologies, while improving rapidly, are still a problem right now due to the need for all the rare earth metals required. The supply cannot meet the demand of a quick paradigm shift to Electric automobiles, buses, trains, trucks, etc.
#2 eventually scientists/entrepreneurs will figure out how to recycle/dispose of used batteries if the replacement cost and/or lack of supply remains high
#3 the 65+% of people in the U.S. living paycheck to paycheck in this country cannot afford one of these vehicles, and purchasing a used one is currently risky business with potentially huge upfront repair costs.
#4 our current electrical grid in this country can barely handle demand right now. There is no coordinated plan to upgrade the grid. The only plan I hear discussed is to take offline fossil fuel burning plants and replace them with alternatives, none of which are 100% reliable. Maybe its time to create some TVA type organizations to address our entire country's grid.
#5 probably one of the biggest political non-starters is telling people that you are going to basically take away their freedom of movement by reducing/eliminating the transportation that they can afford.

 

Lithium battery recycling is already being addressed. This is one company in the works. Currently a penny stock but they are building a facility in Ohio at the moment.

Would be interested in how they deal with the voltage limitations of supercapacitors and the potential safety ramifications that come with how quickly capacitors discharge compared to a chemical battery.

 

Might take a good part of a decade to figure that out. Other solutions could come along. The materials science field is exploding with new developments right now, no pun intended. I have a couple of friends who work in that field at Argonne. They obviously can't tell me much.

Some of what what's going on out there would blow our minds if we knew about it. I've seen enough "experiment gone bad" sci-fi to be a little nervous when I drive by that place on my way to and from work. Kind of relieved Ferme Lab shut down the Tevetron. If anybody was going to open a portal to another dimension it would have been them.

 

This kind of stuff has interested me as long as I can remember as well. I have a cousin that has run a research group at Rutgers for many years in Materials Engineering working with ceramics in attempts to create room temperature superconducting materials.
