USC and UCLA appear to be leaving the PAC-12 and joining the Big Ten.

The only shocker, IMO, is that it was done after the PAC, B1G and ACC made a pact. Guess the pact is off now :). We're moving toward a complete new order in college sports. Sounds like the PAC 12 will die. Maybe now we can have a real playoff without worrying about losing the sacred rose bowl.

So, does Arizona and Arizona State jump to the SEC or Big 12?

I'll miss Bill Walton's broadcasts where he waxes poetically about PAC 12 basketball elitism...

They were pretty annoying with their position of Rose Bowl tradition being more important than anything else.

But the SEC didn’t make an “Alliance” with the other conferences, like the Big 10.

How will the SEC respond to the Big Ten adding USC, UCLA?

SEC would likely desire Clemson, North Carolina and Virginia. Miami and FSU better be careful or they are left outside looking in. FSU should be calling the Big 10 and SEC now begging for a space. ND may be calling the Big 10 as well

More self immolation of college sports driven by money (tv rights) interests.

Back in the real world, will there be anybody left to care? These moves at this point seem to be chasing the next big deal without much consideration for the long term. Problem is I suspect moves like this alienate more fans than it excites. Ratings cliff?

What's the point of having conferences, then?

I'm not buying this "bigger is better" thing. Conferences have traditionally been regional in nature, for the benefit of fans, players, recruits, and budgets. How long will it take before UCLA players, not to mention their moms and dads, get sick of back-to-back-to-back 7-hour flights to the Midwest, and longing for the 1-hour flights to Phoenix instead?

There are only 2 conferences in the NFL, and it works there. Flights to the midwest will be nothing compared to a flight to New Jersey. That's cross country trip. Going to be pretty expensive to fly the non revenue teams all over the country. Hell, even Nebraska is a 1500 mile trip, and that's the shortest distance for USC and UCLA.

Conferences were regional to save money on transportation costs. There is enough money sloshing around now that transportation costs aren't a deal breaker for the real contenders.
