Not sure I’d go that far. But it is hard to win in the tourney if your guard play is suspect. We seem to have several 2’s and 3’s but the 1 is a ???. Maybe Golden believes one of these guys can do it, and have a bigger back court across the board?

I wouldn’t say we should add a PG just for the sake of adding one. A few of the candidates I’ve seen floated around have some somewhat sketchy shooting %’s. Obviously if we could add an elite one that would be a huge boost to expectations, but I don’t think much changes just by checking a box

Johni Broome, Morehead State, Center (BK)

Another factor that could favor Florida is that Broome is from Tampa, FL.
If playing close to family is important while also playing for a promising young coach coach and in-state program, Florida could be the right choice!

Imagine a front-court of Castleton(Deland, FL) & Broome(Tampa ?Plant City) who had both played at Florida High Schools. :)

Broome (listed as a ?freshman) has already scored close to a 1000 points and may have 2-3 years of eligibility left.

The key point in this message -- and all 3 points are outstanding -- is that "Golden will have them playing in a system that works for them." I always thought the Gators looked a bit out of synch last year, and the year before, and the year before that. Just my opinion and observation.

I really hope we get him. Our outlook for next year skyrockets imo if we do. If it's down to us and Auburn than Broome will have to decide between playing with CC or incoming true freshman Yohan Traore (6'10 C out of AZ, #15 overall in 22 class and #4 C) who was originally committed to LSU. Playing close to home would hopefully also be a selling point. Wonder if Traore would be okay with it.

I'm sure CC would welcome it as he wants to win. Could be like the days we had Noah and Horford (obviously not the same), but 2 legitimate big men playing interchangeable.

I believe that Auburn also got a big man through the portal. I can check on that.

Auburn did not get a big man in the portal. I was thinking of Traore, who decommitted from LSU. Traore appears to be a 4, so there does not seem to be any competition at the 5 for Broome at Auburn. It seems as if Broome is going to have to really want to come back to Florida for us to get him.

Good job by White but when I looked at his stats a little closer, he kind of reminded me of Appleby in terms of TO's. That stood out to me. Averaged 14.5 ppg, 4.9 rpg and 4.1 apg... but also 3.1 TO's per game. In their last game where they lost to Loyala of Chicago, Roberts had 17 pts on 5/12 shooting, only 2 assists and 6 TO's. In 9 games this past year, Roberts turned the ball over at least 5 times. Also is only a 70% ft shooter, but I'm sure he can improve in that area.

Between the recruits, transfers, and key returnees. Golden already has put together a pretty nice looking roster to start out with.

Unless my math is off, we are currently at 12 scholarships for next year. So technically only room for 1 more, but when you get to 11,12,13 guys it’s hard because the PT isn’t necessarily there to offer.

Most “insiders” believe he’s gonna choose auburn but…since he left that visit without committing there is always a chance for UF

Roberts was exactly the kind of point guard I was hoping we wouldn’t take. We have enough talent to not need a high usage, high turnover, low shooting % guy at point guard. Roberts is a stud don’t get me wrong, but a much better fit for a team like Georgia than the roster it looks like we’re building

Broome at UF would have a huge impact on the team's fortunes for a few years. Let's hope.

There's always worse. LSU is a fine example of a mess and Georgis has lost nine. They picked up a good guard, first team Missouri Valley player, but has only six committed for next year. It probably good for them in the long run but they need at least two or three more guys. Playing time may not be an issue.

He's the big fish that changes Florida's outlook immediately. No other player available could make the kind of impact that Broome would and I'm sure Golden knows that.

On Florida Basketball Hour, Eric Fawcett talked about if he committed and a few things he mentioned really would make his commitment even better.

The first being how CC played too many minutes last year and now CC and Broome can each play around 26-27 minutes, allowing each player to stay fresh for the entire season. So when CC rests for 13 minutes, you got Broome at center and vice versa. That only leaves about 13 minutes when they play together.

The second how Gonzaga has played a 2 big man system which has worked really well so Golden is very familiar with this style being in the same conference. In fact, Eric didn't see any issues with both big men on the floor together on the offensive end.

The only possible issue he saw was on the defensive end, but Florida may have to play zone depending on the match-up which Golden's teams haven't done previously.

Still, the good by far outweighs any negative and the Gators instantly become a top 25 team. I really hope Florida closes the deal and what an offseason it would be.
