Urban Meyer Fired -- Now General Jags Discussion

Just looked Tosh up and although he was great at Bama, he has a lot of baggage from previous college coaching stops that don't look good. If he's put all of that behind him, he looks like the ideal D-Coordinator.

 

I said this yesterday or the day before but Meyer was about to get fired. I was more shocked it wasn't until they lose their next game. I think the owner had to cut things off while he could. Meyer was a disaster from the beginning. Really go back and look at everything.

Chris Doyle fiasco. Doyle resigned the day after Meyer announced him.

Then over the months of the off season, dozens of stories came out highlighting issues with Meyer and various players. Veterans who didn't like being talked down to as if they were back in college. There was an article that came out shortly later that asked a prominent scout about Meyer's coaching ability and he said Meyer can't coach his way out of a paper bag. He provided proof by saying Meyer is great in college because he coached at blue bloods where the best players pick the schools they want and therefore there is little parity. In the NFL, an 0-10 team can beat a 10-0 team any given week. This is why at 2-11, Meyer will never be successful.

Then there was the Tim Tebow fallout that by itself wouldn't have been a big deal but because it involved Meyer and the various player personnel issues, added another black mark to his resume.

Then as the season began, then the issues bubbled to the surface. Meyer is not accustomed to coaching a losing team. The question was always how does he handle things when he's not winning? Well we found out during the course of the season, Meyer was the cancer killing the locker room. Up until his firing, not a single player or assistant wanted to work for Meyer. Lawrence was ready to ask to be traded after the season. In fact, last week, Lawrence and Meyer got into it after the game because of the way Meyer dragged their RB to the bench when Lawrence asked, even begged, Meyer to keep him playing because he was the best chance of winning.

Then in a meeting after that, Meyer called his assistants losers because he's a winner and they are not. Well using the Transitive Theory, Meyer is a loser, because he hired all of them.

Additionally, after I read about this latest blowup, it sounded awfully familiar.

Sounds like Mullen. The way he coaches the players reminds of the way Meyer is treating his players. Even the injury excuse is exactly the same (with Mullen, it was with AR and why he would run skinny Davis and only give Pierce 6 carries a game).

Then add the lap dance videos and yeah Meyer was a mess. He should have ran to ND while he could, but now he'll have to go hide in his bunker because no one will touch him.

I do think Urban could resume coaching at the college level, that is if he even wants to stay in Football.

He has 3 Crystals on his resume, I imagine some college would show interest in 23. Not that it matters to me really, we are set with our guy and I could care less if Urban stays in coaching or not.

At this point he probably should go somewhere where coasting to 9-3 while not working as hard is seen as a success (like a mid-tier ACC school or something) but I'm not sure his ego would let him do that.

 

At this time he is too toxic for anyone in the upper tier (College and NFL) to hire.

 

My only issue is the kicking somebody at work stance. Let’s not pretend that the NFL is a normal job. There is a lot of stuff that goes on in the NFL that would never be tolerated in a ‘normal’ job.

 

Something happened with Coughlin after the 1999 season. His last three season were all losing seasons. Those seasons also saw many Jaguar players not play because of injuries. The injury string continued during his tenure of New York Giant head coach. Yes he was a good coach with the X's and O's and game plans. However, he was a horrible coach at keeping a team intact. Also, his tenure as Jags their Top Executive showed that he really drove the bus off the road.

 

Yes, because NFL players are angels and never participate in that kind of behavior, right? The media acts like Urban went to some strip club like he was Drake throwing Benjimans and popping bottles.

 

Drinking at home or the office and diddling your secretary would have worked fine for Meyer. I have always been happy with one women but men with huge egos seem to need more.

 

Last year the Jaguar's ownership and management had to clean up Coughlin's mess. Coughlin's actions bought unwanted attention from the NFL Players Union and made it impossible to be competitive in the free agent market.
This year Meyer's actions/behavior bought more unwanted attention. Meyer could of survived the late night bar fiasco, but his kicking a player and calling his coaches and players a bunch of losers was bringing more negative attention to the franchise. The Jag's ownership and management took the appropriate action to repair the image of the franchise and to win over the current and future players.

Meyer had his fair shot with the Jags and blew it all on his own accord.

 

Your answer is a deflection. Most NFL players who break the rules quickly end up out of the league. Meyer getting a lap dance did not get him fired. He was given a chance to win back the confidence of the ownership, his coaches, and his players. Him calling coaches and players losers (and other actions) did not win that confidence. As for the Media, they did not get Meyer fired by their over zealous reporting. The irony here, is that Meyer gave the media their ammo.

 

I still remember the number of player arrests during one of the championship years under Meyer....31. I remember thinking "is this what it takes to win a natty? Do you really have to recruit thugs in order to win?". Then Meyer left and the player arrests left with him except for a couple of dunderheaded BB gun fights or something. Meyer is a brilliant on the field coach....but he is lousy with player relationships. He is not a complete coach. You can't treat NFL veterans like college kids. Bluster and bluff won't work with hardened men playing for a paycheck as big or bigger than yours. Urban Meyer is a critically flawed man and a flawed coach who needs to get out of the game once and for all. And for all you Meyer fans who wanted him back....let's just say that this time the angels were on our side

 

The book on Coughlin was always that he was great short term but his grating ways became too much after a few seasons. That's what they said in Jax and NY, anwyay.
