If our current strategy doesn't work, I think that'll be the next step. I've been calling for a full scale lockdown, but I'm losing hope by the day that it can ever happen and it's too late to implement a Korea-style containment. We also can't stay on lockdown indefinitely, as the economic fall out will kill more than the virus after a few months. Seniors will still die in droves with this strategy, but this may make it happen slow enough that most can avoid that fate until a vaccine comes along.

Mortgages too. I don’t know why everyone wouldn’t call their bank and add 90 days onto their mortgage free of interest and no credit impact. Not sure on rent though.

I’d put rent each month in a savings account and wait 90 days to pay all 3 months at once. If you’re out of a job and have to move at least you saved 3 months rent and you could leave under the cover of night. Lol.

I paid my rent this month, but I'm still working and getting paid. I feel for my landlord. She's a small business owner (and her businesses aren't considered essential).

I think the govt wanted to come up with a way to help with rent, but there is really no realistic way to do it, especially on short notice.

My brother rents from a big company so if I were him I’d think about not paying. Can’t your landlord push off her mortgage payment? Don’t know answer.

Pro tip: if a website has a pay wall you can open an incognito window in Chrome and paste the link there. Paywall no more.

Pro tip - I manage distribution for 45 newspapers and have been working on layoffs, furloughs and pay reductions in addition to the regular cost cutting we’ve been doing for years.

We need people to pay for the product. Typically folks don’t say that if you slip a Snickers bar in your pocket at 7-Eleven, you don’t have to pay for it.

I really don’t intend that to be the start of an ugly fight. In the old days we had folks put $.50 in a vending machine and take two papers instead of one. Some poor contractor ate the pilferage.

Gathering the news costs money. One day when there just isn’t enough revenue left to pay for it and Twitter and Facebook are the source of news for everyone some folks will look back with regret.

Mild rant over. I know you meant well.

I have no idea. I'm not worried about it. As I said, my paychecks are still coming and aren't going anywhere.

My daughter paid her rent in Brooklyn today. Even though she hadn’t been there for 3 weeks, most of her stuff is still there and she’s still employed and getting paid with benefits, so it was a very easy decision.

Holy cow, unless worldometer got the number wrong, NY had 505 deaths today.
We crossed 5k just like that. Over 1000 today too.

What about owners like myself who depend on that money to pay bills and live?

Obviously anyone can catch it. Anyone can succumb to it. But that is not the same as everyone carrying the same consequences which is the point you made as well....

Seems like anyone tries to discuss alternatives or nuance especially given the lacknof adherence to shutdowns and the same blanket replies are given.

Cut every household a check. $1000 per adult, $500 per kid. Done. There are very realistic ways of accomplishing this, but none that we have the political will to do.

Once the dust settles, then jump through all of the means-testing hoops and count it as an advance on their taxes for next year for those above a certain income. We are trying to jump through all the hoops before helping people, and the result will be that the people who need it won't get it in time for it to do any good.

Way I figure it there's not much you can do either way. If you evict your tenants because they can't pay the rent, good luck finding new tenants who can.

Sorry about the imgur gallery. Sources are cited at the end. I'm just including the last of the images. The whole thing is worth reading.

This is why having a competent leader matters and why it's easy to see our leader isn't competent.

“Isn’t competent” is being very generous.
