So 80K died from a known strain of the flu with no quarantines or social distancing, and yet you deduce that a novel strain with a higher mortality rate would have had lower impact and thus these enacted measures were unnecessary?

Yet 60% of Americans think he is doing a good job on this thing while only 38% do not.

I agree. Heck, I probably still sit in the 38%, though not as harshly as previously.
    Can't go back in time.

We shall see. We should all be hoping he has 100% approval for handling it when we look back.

It's obvious why Trump took over the briefings. He wants to control the narrative, to hell with "the best information." The narrative is the same every day (surprise!): "I'm doing an incredible job." And even then he can't get through a briefing without insulting somebody, whether it's Mitt Romney being in quarantine ("Oh, that's too bad") or a reporter asking a question that he doesn't like ("You're a terrible reporter"). He is absolutely pathetic and, at a time like this, literally a menace to society.

Cuomo just did something that Trump would never do.

He was answering a question and then turned to one of his staff ans asked him if he said anything wrong.

Anyone notice the striking difference in how the Democrat and Republican governed states are fairing in keeping the damages from this stuff to a minimum?

Maybe a few anecdotals like Gov Newsom doing a real good job in CA but the Democrat Governors overall must have been really unprepared for something like this to have the results they are getting.

That is a good data point.. Thanks.

    Now, 80K is bad year.

Let's also remember that this Coronavirus is hitting on a much faster curve (published numerous times here) in both number of cases and deaths. CDC worst case was 2 million deaths in this country, and that very well could have been reduced due to political pressures.

The only places it is slowing down is where there have been very strong measures put into place on mass testing and/or isolating people.

If we don't do one or both of those things, this virus is going to get nasty. That's why so many areas are shutting down and trying to keep people isolated as much as possible,

Can’t go back in time, but can honestly hold those responsible who wasted that time...the best asset we had...through downplaying, wishful thinking, lies, and failure to use the tools available at the time (some of which, like the DPA still haven’t been invoked) rather than confronting the facts and realities of a pandemic.

True about increased contraction generally resulting in more deaths, but you are making an assumption. There are more variables that would impact the case fatality rate. Again, proximity does not impact mortality rate.

I mean, he isn't like that at every presser, and absolutely lets his medical experts have their say at the briefings. Calling out that reporter was terrible form by a POTUS. It had zero to do with his treatment of the virus in real terms.

Proximity impacts the contraction rate. The unknown, due to our lack of proper testing, is the contraction vs the mortality rate. But based on data from S Korea that does have more through testing, that number is sobering.
