I thought the world doesn’t respect Trump or the US

There is a colorable argument to be made that this photograph represents the international relations catastrophe that Trump has birthed. Given the last time Zelensky came here, and Trump/Robin acted like 3rd grade Mean Girls, European Leaders made the decision that Trump was not responsible to have a meeting in a room alone with Zelensky. The travesty here is that this picture epitomizes the discord the US has caused with its allies all over the globe.

 

Proof that Trump's an idiot? There's so much to choose from, but here's one of the all time greats. You can't read this and not conclude that the person who said it is a complete idiot:

I guess some people really want this - other countries bowing down to us to get what they want. Clearly that makes them feel better about themselves.

It really depends on whether you want reliable long term friends and partners, or wish to exert your power and leverage your partners to maximize your position now.

Countries, friends and foes, are doing what they have to given the situation now, but also are hedging their bets long term in case the status quo is the new normal and the US has permanently become a transactional partner. I saw a video the other day how China is investing new ports in Brazil that will enable them to ship even more food from Brazil to China. This had already started in 2018 after Trump tariffed Chinese goods resulting in less US farm exports. US farmers now have a a smaller and shrinking market in China to sell to.

Out allies will do (and are doing) similar things. They will come to rely less on us, which in some ways is good, but we will have less power, both geopolitically and economically.

In a visit to India this week, China’s top diplomat said the two Asian nations should deepen cooperation amid international threats to free trade, a sign that President Trump’s trade war could accelerate a thaw in the frosty relationship between Beijing and New Delhi.

Both countries have faced hefty tariff threats from Trump over their trade policies, with India singled out in recent weeks for its large-scale purchases of Russian oil.

In remarks in New Delhi on Monday at a meeting with his Indian counterpart, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made a veiled reference to the U.S. by noting that New Delhi and Beijing should find ways to coexist against a backdrop of “unilateral bullying.”

China and India “should view each other as partners and opportunities rather than adversaries or threats,” Wang said Monday, according to a statement from China’s Foreign Ministry.

Are you that dense? Europe was generally happy with the level of support Ukraine was getting from Biden, so THERE WAS NO ACTUAL NEED FOR THE MEETING. Biden understood the importance of freedom and independence, and had no love for dictators. Trump doesn't understand freedom or independence, or responsibility, and he wants to be a dictator. Hence, the need for the meeting.
