Per analytics guru Evan Miyakawa (evanmiya.com), here is where Gators (and future Gators) ended last season. First thing to know is that there are 2,983 players ranked 1st to last. There are actually more players than that in D1, but that's the number of players that were involved in enough possessions for the overall ranking. There are well over 4,000 players nationally. Haugh: 5th-best player overall, nationally. This makes him the #2 player nationally among returning players for this coming season, just behind Joseph Tugler (Houston). Clayton Jr. : #12 Condon: #19 Richard: #35 Martin: #71 Chinyelu: #339 Aberdeen: #555 Alexis: #601 Handlogten and Klavzar didn't play enough possessions to figure into the overall rankings. If you reduce the number of possessions calculated, you get Handlogten at #114 and Klavzar at #894. Handlogten's number is extremely impressive. Incoming: Boogie Fland, #118 Xaivian Lee: #311 A.J. Brown: #1,146 Expect all of these to rise. Fland got a really high rank even though he was just a freshman. Brown gets good marks for his offense, but his defense dragged his number down. They'll work on that.
If you want to know the very definition of "bad," look at Mississippi Valley State. The worst 6 players in the whole country are all from that one school. Yikes. Makes me think they aren't even offering scholarships.
I wouldn't have guessed many of these results. I value Haugh, but I wouldn't have guessed Top 50. Condon either.
Evanmiya tries to account for the little things that others don't, and weighs in with minutes, possessions, effectiveness of possessions, minutes against the strength of opposition, and minutes WITH the quality of teammates on the floor. I have no idea how that can be measured for every team and player in the country, but the guy has a PhD in statistics, so I trust in his methods (and so does our staff). Haugh does so many of the little things well and it all adds up. We'll know soon into the season if his shift to the 3 keeps his numbers at that elite level.
First time I've heard that the staff uses his stuff. I know they use KP and Torvik, but never heard about Miyakawa. He is actually my least favorite of the quants. Think he had Aberdeen rated as our 7th best defender last year, which is insane. His algorithm has always rated Haugh insanely highly. I love the kid, but no way he is fifth in the country (returning or otherwise).
Seems like I heard or saw it somewhere, but I may be wrong. There's a first time for everything, I guess.
I think it's well deserved! Haugh does so much positive while doing very little negative. Below is my reply to GatorPlanet's post during the season that Haugh was rated #7 in the nation (at that time) by evanmiya.
So, I had to look it up. They went 3-28. One of their big wins was--and I swear I'm not making this up--over the Mississippi University for Women.
wow, very impressive, especially Haugh obviously. I would think with both Lee's and Fland's passing abilities and creativity plus another year of development and size that our top 4 front court players might all be in the top 100 by year's end. We should be able to win the rebound battle every night too.
wish we could have known this in advance, we could have all tried out for the team and said we're Div 1 players
Yeah, our bigs should be getting excited right about now. Coach Hartman is no doubt working them hard on low post offense. They're already terrific in interior defense. Here's my work plan, free of charge. Chinyelu: work on receiving and controlling the ball. He had bad hands for the first third of the season, but he seemed really improved after that. Has a nice soft touch within six feet. Now needs to work on fakes and turns. Condo: Pretty good moves already, just needs to work on finishing. There were games when he just couldn't finish unless he was unopposed. But man, what an athlete and floor-runner. Handlogten: Work on that baby hook, baby. And free throws. Lots of points to be had. Haugh: Just keep gettin' stronger. Chins and Handles are both listed as 265 pounds now. And not from buckets of chicken wings. They looking stronger in the summer workout stuff I've seen. Over the course of the season, it's likely that at least one of these guys will miss time due to injury or illness. I have faith that Mikic can come in and give us good minutes when needed. He's a big, strong guy and shows some good movement in video.
