Republican Governors shut down too, until they decided to stop listening to their own public health folks and go with populist nutbars, or whatever was convenient to them.

That isn’t to say they should only listen to maximalist public health positions (there was certainly a balance to be struck with economic considerations). But rather than blame public health for the “mistrust”, perhaps Republicans should look to the grifters and politicians who flip-flopped and lied so easily.

I'm sure he agrees that the economy doesn't look good long term but I don't expect him to admit it

    “It’s for the greater good”

America desperately needs those low wage jobs that were offshored to come back just in time for them to be replaced by AI in the near future.

America has been getting ripped off for too long, despite how incredibly wealthy it’s made us.

    Make it make sense.

I have so much to criticize Trump. But with the Pandemic, he like all the other world leaders was working without a script or plan. What a crazy, crazy, crazy place we were in in March 2020.

You could be describing the .com bubble or the real estate crash plus Herbert Hoover tariffs of 1929

Setting aside schools, where blue states kept them closed too long, were blue states actually shutting down businesses? I thought most business were acting on their own based upon guidance. I may be wrong.

People still forget what an absolute shit show NYC was at the beginning of the pandemic, and also a major reason for various measures was to try not to completely overrun the healthcare system

In Gainesville, lot's of restaurants were shut down and barber shops- Required by the blue ran city and county. Then Gov. Desantis stepped in and over ruled them.

Pretty sure it was directed from the states? Literally everything was shut at first. I still remember driving down i75 in the immediate days after the shut down. At one stretch not a car in sight in either direction, like something out of a zombie movie.

I don’t think it took long for grocery stores and such to re-open. That was maybe a week or two at most? Diff states had different rules. The dumb thing was keeping small businesses closed, while allowing superstores open as “essential business”. I recall a florist (probably in CA) pointing out her customers would just buy flowers at wal-mart, and get exposed to more people there! I agreed with the minimization of “events” and gatherings, but some of the policies of handling businesses - like shuttering a small florist shop - was definitely misguided even if well intentioned. A packed sports bar on the other hand was a different can of worms.

Here in NC, yes. Governor Cooper kept businesses closed for weeks.
Governor Cooper Announces Statewide Stay at Home Order Until April 29

He actually sued businesses that violated and is facing ongoing counter litigation to this day.

Here, Cooper let restaurants reopen, but forced bars to stay closed. So Buffalo Wild Wings was allowed to reopen, but the corner bar was not. He is still facing an ongoing class action suit because of that.

Well Buffalo Wild Wings is indeed a restaurant + sports bar, so I guess they “benefited” from just happening to straddle a grey zone. Different states came up with their own ideas on sit down dining, so in most places I doubt Buffalo Wild Wings had nearly full business (at least not through ‘20, and probably well into ‘21 until things became normal again).

I need to send out an email template to my customers requesting they stop buying because we’re in a recession.

There are some variables that I think need to be considered in each state.

Let’s use Florida as an example.

Florida has an elderly population. They are the most susceptible to the effects of covid and any other disease. Covid hit nursing homes and elderly living facilities hard.

Florida depends a lot on tourism. That income dropped off significantly for obvious reasons.

Probably off-topic, funny story. Back in 2020 I was watching the Marlins playing the Nationals on television in a nearly empty stadium. My first reaction was why was the stadium empty of DeSantis had ended the social distancing restrictions and then it occurred to me that even before the pandemic the Marlins regularly played in their home games before less than 10,000 fans in a stadium that seated around 40,000.
