Absolutely. You can find anecdotes of crime in every city. They are not reason for federal mobilization.

Trump wants to send in troops and now maga supports this. But what’s the goal? Fed troops might be needed for riots or a massive weather calamity. ie LA riots and Nola. Those are more short term. But for just ongoing large metro crime, will troops be stationed on every corner in DC long term?

All cities are not under federal authority. Those cities also just did not re-elect a politician that is going on trial for taking bribes from the FBI in '24 and then say that the FBI wants to "kill me" during his swearing in ceremony.

I would say that it does not matter if that is the current state of DC. I live just across the river and I often avoid DC just because of these things. So while to some this is just an argument over how dangerous DC is compared to other cities, this is something that I deal with on a daily basis. DC has had to impose curfews multiple times this summer because gangs of young kids were basically rioting around popular areas. Here is the map of the current one:

Washington DC curfew zone map shows where under 17s banned from gathering

There are a ton of great restaurants and things to see and do in DC but we do not go into the district as often as I would like because of the issues with crime. When we do go in, I often have to figure out if valet parking is available and if not, where we are going to park and how far away it is. This is something that is very common among people I know in this part of Virginia.

I specifically do not live in DC because of this. But lets be clear, DC's leadership made a lot of specific choices for it to be like this.

Why bother with the National Guard? Why not go straight to the Marines, there's a whole bunch of them nearby.

This is not hyperbole. Trump has proven he is willing and able to over react in any situation, regardless of cost or efficacy.

Because there are not any infantry battalions located close to DC. They are all down in NC at MCB Lejeune.

How would Trump even know what DC is like? When he's not at Mar A Lago, he's traveling the world to hawk his golf courses. See if you can spot the ego-driven rhetoric. Epstein deflection requires a big pot to stir, and creating chaos in the Capitol will suffice for his purposes.

“I’m announcing a historic action to rescue our nation’s capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor and worse. This is Liberation Day in D.C., and we’re going to take our capital back,” Trump told reporters, adding that he was also directing that homeless encampments be cleared.

Yes, let's be very clear. Both the rate for serious crime and the rate of homelessness is lower right now in DC than it was in 2018. This is an overblown Federal power grab, no more , no less. One wonders when some people will open their eyes to what dear leader is doing.

I think Trump thinks he is going to pull a Rudy Giuliani style governance on DC. I'm willing to bet Trump think that since it worked in NYC and ended up really turning the city around, that he can do the same thing to DC.

I do not think DC is like NYC in late 80's but do not tell me that it is well run. The last really good mayor that DC had was Adrian Fenty but Democrats did not think he was far left enough and dumped him for Grey back in '11.

No. It is mainly a training base and has elements of HQMC located there.

Due to state and NG politics, I wondering which National Guard units the Trump Admin wants to use. There are Virginia, Maryland, and DC units available. There are a lot of politics that go into who ends up being senior officers in those units and that may drive the SecDef to decide to use one over the others.
