I hope he gets a legit shot before it's too late, but it probably isn't going to happen in Tampa. Hopefully he can move on to a more promising situation, sooner rather than later.
He is on a one year deal with Tampa. He is also solidly QB2. He needs Mayfield to go down with an extended injury to get a shot and put out some film for his next move in 2026/27.
Yep, but does he sign another deal with Tampa and stay backing up or try for a starter job? That is a dilemma if it's me. If he goes and starts and fails, his career may be over. If he sits on the bench for four more years and never starts he's eight years into a pension And collecting millions every year.
He needs to leave if he has a good year. The Bucs have too much money tied up in Mayfield. Also Trask will start to become too expensive to be a backup. The Bucs can draft a back up QB in the later rds for less money. Trask's one year deal was for 2.7 mil with 1.3 mil guaranteed. Edit: just looked up what backups are making and Trask still has plenty of wiggle room to remain an experienced backup for a few more years. He will need to somehow get extended playing time to command a higher salary even as a back up.
Simple: Take the money, enjoy whatever preseason playing time is on offer. I'm a fan, but he's not starting anywhere, at least not for long.
Backup qbs that don't completely melt down can have very long nfl careers. Longer than Andrew Luck's of the world.
Trask looked good. He locked up #2. He is one play away after Mayfield getting hurt from starting. I think he is in a good position.
I really wish he would end up on the Steelers radar this year. Would have a legit shot to win the starting role next season after Rogers is one and done. Big strong kid who looks like he is made for the steel city.
I don't know. The fact that he's only got a one-year deal now doesn't exactly scream job security - especially after they brought in a has-been like Teddy Bridgewater to compete for the #2 spot. Couple that with the fact that there are several mediocre/over-the-hill starters out there, a new spot with a shot at a starter's job might be the better, long-term way to go. FTR, he's been battling naysayers his entire career, and the NFL isn't exactly overrun with QBs who have never struggled. If he continues to play well and beats Bridgewater out, don't be surprised if he gets some inquiries when his current deal runs out.
They brought TB in as a camp arm. Both Mayfield and the other backup QB,Pratt, are injured leaving Trask as the only one with any experience.
He should leave for the right opportunity, period! Don’t leave to go to a bad team just to look bad as a “starting” QB. He put up good numbers Saturday, even with poor pass blocking. Play ten more years as a solid backup on good teams. Take that money and enjoy the next 50 years of your life.
Any assumption that he even has a choice in the matter may be dead wrong. When Trask was asked at a presser why he thought management had brought TB into the mix, he indicated that he had asked the same question and had not received a straight answer. That does not bode well. My personal take is that he is no longer seen as a potential starter OR apparently as a reliable, long-term back-up in Tampa. Hence, my suggestion that his future does not lay in a long and happy tenure as a valued piece with the Bucs - in any capacity. Admittedly, I'm just a fan and I want to see him succeed as fully as reasonably possible. But if he at least gets a chance to compete for a starting job and has to accept a back-up role elsewhere, so be it. I just don't see either of those things ever happening with the Bucs. The key for significantly extending his time in the NFL, IMHO, is playing well in his remaining time at Tampa and hopefully getting a decent opportunity elsewhere.
I.E. Shane Matthews - 14 years. Backup NFL QB, as an occupation, ain't a bad gig, compared to most real world stiffs, including myself.
