It's not a question of when the surveys are collected, it's a matter of reporting. Smaller businesses frequently submit the data in the surveys later than large corporations. It's the primary reason for the revisions.

You realize that the initial report has always been reported as "preliminary" because survey collection always takes time, right? It should also be noted that survey collections are pretty consistent to what they have been for years.

But I am sure firing their staff will make collections happen faster...

Trump's former BLS Commissioner William Beach has come out and said there is no way the numbers were rigged. And numbers today are more accurate today than they were a few decades ago.

“There’s no way for that to happen,” said Beach, who was replaced by McEntarfer in January 2024. “The commissioner doesn’t do anything to collect the numbers. The commissioner doesn’t see the numbers until Wednesday before they’re published. By the time the commissioner sees the numbers, they’re all prepared. They’re locked into the computer system. The only thing the commissioner does on Wednesday is to kind of do the edits on the text.”
Studies indicate that the agency’s data is more accurate than 20 or 30 years ago, Beach said. He added that he didn’t think “there’s any grounds at all for this firing” and that the move “undermines credibility in BLS.”

Lutnick Disbanded Statistical Task Force Working to Improve Survey Response Rates | National Review
Trump is mad about inaccurate jobs reports. One of the top reasons the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ jobs reports have been more error-prone in recent years is that the response rate to one of its most important surveys fell off a cliff during Covid and has not recovered. The Federal Economic Statistics Advisory Committee (FESAC) was a team of unpaid statistical experts that was working to solve the issue of low response rates, among other things. FESAC was disbanded in February by Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick.

Democrats should capitalize on this and say Trump is mucking with the numbers, including inflation, to make them look better which will decrease your social security checks.

“A decade ago, the BLS got responses from nearly 90% of families in the monthly household survey, a phone survey that determines the unemployment rate. In recent months, the figure has hovered below 70%.

The falling response rates so far haven’t put a dramatic dent in the reports’ accuracy, economists said. But only with more funding could the BLS pursue long-term solutions, such as creating an online version of the household survey to improve response rates, said the Friends of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a group that advocates for the bureau to get more resource

Revisions can be a confusing headache. Yet they are an important sign that the BLS can be trusted to respond to the latest data regardless of the consequences, economists said.“

When you have to file your re-employment numbers you have to list total employees each month. Seems like both federal and state could easily access this data to determine actual employment numbers based on some metric. But for anyone who has filed with FDOR online it is antiquated as shit. With minimal infrastructure they could streamline this data easily.

Trump cuts BLS funding which impacts their ability to survey businesses. He then fires the director because he feels that the survey numbers are wrong. Pure comedy
