Another ignorant quote, obviously from someone who does not understand history. And you don't have to look any further than WWII. Germany looked fairly unimpressive in its takeover of Poland, against a nation where the cavalry was not tanks, but soldiers on horseback. There were no other major war threats on the horizon that America or Europe was aware of. There were other potentially aggressive countries with powerful militaries, to be sure, but they weren't doing anything of concern (Japan was, of course, brutalizing the people of eastern China, but that was of no concern to the West). After a failure of England and France to respond to the Poland invasion, Germany invaded France. Italy decided to join forces with Germany, not that it did Germany a lot of good (except to give Germany an ally in the Mediterranean to try to disrupt oil flow from the Middle East to England). Then Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and then invaded the Philippines and pushed the Brits out of Singapore, and then Malaysia. Almost all of the world's rubber was produced in Malaysia. It wasn't a world war, until it was.

 

Because Germany and Japan just woke up angry one morning and decided to invade the world. There are no other factors to consider. Nuance must not be entertained. Germany and Japan wholly evil in their intentions. US and allies pure as the driven snow.

 

If you can justify their intentions, go ahead. Nuance away. They were countries caught in the past, looking to expand their empires and gain land and natural resources without paying for them, much like Russia is doing in Ukraine. The time for conquest and empire-building had passed. WWII did cost England most of its empire.
