I wonder if he had been informed about the changes to tariffs that were being made *checks notes* today...before being sent to TV to spout that nonsense.

I think that the accounting/tax treatments of investments in the BBB should incentivize investment. However, trade deficits have been a huge driver of private direct investment....which fell 15% in the 2nd Q. No one seems to even know about the current account surplus we've enjoyed.

Who would want to be named as the replacement? You’ll get fired with the next bad jobs report.

I wonder how much this impacts the dollar and stock market on Monday. If investors think the books are really being cooked, they will lose faith in the US market. At least we can tax/tariff our way outta it .

In better news for Trump, one of the governors on the Federal Reserve Board is resigning early. Trump is quoted as saying he's very happy at this turn of events. Any guesses as to who Trump will nominate to fill this post? This person could replace Powell when he steps down.

Speaking of exciting economic news (a little off-topic) but my husband is retiring within the month, and we need a good estate planner/money manager. Any recommendations?

Then the new person won’t issue a bad jobs report.
    Problem solved

there is no way of disentangling it(that I know of), but I wonder if mkts would not have been up or only slightly down if there was not also tariff madness in the mix today. the weak jobs report by itself coulda boosted the mkt....it sure boosts the chances of a rate cut.

When he does these things l always wonder if he’s a demented sociopath or just stupid. I can’t wait to see what the WSJ and NYT has to say about this. Memo to White House staff: Hide the ketchup from POTUS.

great question- what is the impact of Trump putting in a lackey to provide questionable data. BLS report many different data sets. Companies use the data to benchmark cola, payroll, employment trends and what sectors are doing well, areas for investment, etc. Trump just chopped away at that trust and transparency.

WSJ - “U.S. economic statistics have been considered the gold standard for decades, the product of concerted efforts that began in the depths of the Great Depression to better understand how the economy works. Trump’s move throws the quality of America’s statistical apparatus into question.”

So which loser from The Apprentice does he go after this time? After all, they are already used to him saying “You’re fired”.
