For one we basically don’t make… cars. Japan doesn’t seem to like trucks and SUV’s. Actually, when you look at their bestsellers list they apparently don’t much like the cars their own makes produce for the U.S. market either. Their #1 seller is familiar, the Toyota Corolla, after that a bunch of subcompact and smaller models I’ve never heard of. Only a sprinkling of cars they even sell to U.S. markets. They seem to have a thing for tiny minivans over there. Oddly there is now a niche market for those tiny cars and tiny kai trucks here (where states allow them to be registered), but people have to wait 20 or 25 years to legally import them. Why? Because of safety and emissions tests. That whole arrangement is kinda crazy to me as we allow exemptions for the import of 25 year old outdated tech, but meanwhile have restrictions preventing newer/safer versions.
