I seem to remember taking these tests, and failing, completely. The dread in the lead-up to the Big Day. The rise of humiliation, and the fall of self-esteem. In junior high I was about 4' 10" tall, and sadly, it was not all wiry muscle. I was afraid of balls thrown in my direction, and in kickball I usually fell down when trying to kick.

Still, I don't really have a problem with the resumption of this Program. I don't think it will have an impact on juvenile obesity, but like chicken soup, it can't hurt (except for feelings, just get over it!)

"President Donald Trump on Thursday will bring back the presidential fitness test for America’s children and charge a slate of famous athletes with helping him inspire “a new generation of healthy, active citizens,” a White House official said."

"Trump plans to sign an executive order resurrecting the test, which for decades pushed children across the country to do 40 push-ups, 10 pull-ups and a 6.5-minute mile — some of the requirements to earn a Presidential Physical Fitness Award. The Obama administration disbanded the test in 2012, replacing it with a program focused on overall health instead of athleticism."

I have no issue with this, wasn’t even aware it was “disbanded”. Of course according to the link, at the time of the change only 1 in 5 kids were getting the exercise they needed and this was the reason for the change. There’s nothing wrong with the idea of setting goals or having kids compete. The question will still be how to get those 4 out of 5 remaining kids to get sufficient exercise.

I played little league baseball and then later on played Pop Warner football, I loved these tests. I found no shame in not winning it. We had some really fit kids back in the day. In our entire middle school I could only remember maybe 4 or 5 fat kids in the entire school.

Eh, I don’t see a problem either. Agreed, it does virtually nothing, good or bad. I loved these days because I was going to kill it. But I did feel bad for the guys who couldn’t do a pullup or the girls who couldn’t “hang.”

Ironically when I got older, heavier, and stronger than ever I could do fewer pullups than back in those days. Pulling 200 pounds was a lot different than whatever scrawn I was pulling then. I have chronic tendonosis now and can’t do 10 pullups before the pain is too much. I would fail this test now.

I did manage a few pathetic sit-ups, but I could hang from that bar until the sun explodes before I'd move from that inert position. Running in Key West--or anywhere in Florida, really--just seemed like an engraved suffering invitation, that I politely declined.

Just please don't rename the Program the Trump Presidential Fitness Test. I know naming things after himself is his self-love language.

Man, I forgot about that! And it was the one thing I was good at. I was very limber and bendy. Just weak, slow, and uncoordinated.

At first I thought you were talking about a test for a person’s fitness to be President, but you’re talking about the President’s Counsel on Physical Fitness for kids.

Agreed, along with unstructured play. Schools doing away w recess is a mistake. OTOH, let's not blame the schools for today's youth obesity problem. In addition to eating better, kids need to get off their iPads / video games, get outside and run around.

Agreed. Give grade school kids 45 minutes a day in school to kick a soccer ball around or play flag football so they get use to some form of physical activity during their daily life.

I was never any good at football but still played it in high school because I loved the game. Seeing what the weather was been like this week on the East Coast, still wonder how I was able to do two a day practices in this heat in full pads and still wake up the next day to do it over again.

As an ex-fat kid I didn't mind taking fitness tests. It is a little embarrassing to come in last in all the running drills but I made up for it in the strength events. Sit ups was my strength. I wasn't worth a hoot in football or basketball. I could hold my own in baseball simply because I played catcher. Wrestling was my sport.

That said I am no longer a fat kid....more like a fat man.

Man, letting these kids not only move but also just work out the yard dynamics is a real thing.

I take my kids outside any excuse I get. We always have a plan, it’s not just pandemonium. But the idea is at some point we hit a flow state, and they are just being civil teenagers.

FTR, this is AP and this past year we were 10+ points higher versus state (VA), nation and global in every category except pollution (water and air, in which we were slightly above average; I’ll fix that.)

I get all sorts of complaints from parents about “playing kickball.” Calm down, watch your kids annihilate those students from China you’re so worried about.

We used to love the unstructured play. It usually was either dodgeball or kill the man with the ball.

What I remember about the fitness test was laughing at all us guys who would walk around bent over the next day because we'd done so many situps. Except laughing made it worse.

If they are administered by his doctor, every kid is going to have the makings of a professional athlete

What was the point of those tests? I remember doing them in middle school, but its not like there is any follow up to them. It was back to playing dodgeball or whatever the next day, not extra running for the chubby kids.
