We hired Geoff Collins as a defensive analyst at SC. I know that he use to be DC at UF. I’m assuming he was brought here, in case our DC takes a head coaching job after this year, so we could just slide him into the DC slot. Just wanted to get the thoughts on his time at UF.
I loved him. His defense literally won games for us because our offense was so inept. The money down and turnover board started during his tenure here so a lot of people hate him for that, but his defenses were legit.
He is really great but it depends on if he's gotten the Head Coaching bug out of his system yet. Temple was never going to be successful and he had some decent teams at G tech. If the right team comes around he might jump.
You should really go to StingTalk or some other Georgia Tech board to get their opinion. They won't be nearly as nice as everyone here is being, that's for sure.
We didn’t have him as a head coach, but he was very good here as a dc. SC didn’t hire him as a head coach either. As an analyst, this is a no brainer, great hire. I don’t think they’re planning to make him HC in waiting.
Was a good DC here under McElwain, but, he did have the benefit of being left with Muschamp's defense-heavy roster. Zero risk to hire him as an analyst.
Hated the money down boards and whomever instructed assistants to jump up and down with them. Mostly because I remember the defense not getting off the field. Maybe that was after his departure and the boards were retained, who knows.
The turnover board started in his era for sure. It was just a silly whiteboard the kids signed after a turnover. They liked it and it encouraged them to get off the field limiting celebration penalties so I didn’t mind it. Money down stuff started around this time. Don’t know if it was him or not, but his defenses really only had a hard time getting off the field because our offense went three and out over and over and over again, or the defense scored, putting them right back on the field. The defense was solid, and kept us in games. They did give up some fourth quarter points, but I attribute that as much to our offense as the defense. Offense was not only making them play most of the game, but they did nothing to give hope and keep the defense energized. Getting down a score was pretty much a death knell.
We never called him "4th and Collins" so that is better than some options we had. He was very good here.
