With Big 10 media days going on all they talk about is how unfair it is for some conferences (read SEC) to have only 8 conference games. They are so full of shit and only want us to play 9 so SEC teams would have a better chance of taking a loss. The Big 10 is extremely top heavy along with the ACC so I put together my own ranking as if the two conferences were merged. If there was a way to increase the gaps I would put their bottom feeders way down and even compare them to a D3 school. The other thing is that us S. Car and KY play our rivalry game outside the conference. That needs to be taken into account as well. Also, how many different teams from the Big 10 have won a Natty in the last 10 years hell, 30 years, including the new teams. Meh, we should play 10 and screw FSU…no need for that to be permanent. I’d rather rotate with other teams.
If you need a cupcake win to get in the playoffs you should stay home, bring on 9, heck even 10 conference games.
IMO, the more things change the more they stay the same. They go to 12 teams and the only thing the power folks give a damn about is how much money they can make (or lose) if they don't have their "respectful" teams in the playoffs. Let's take a slight tangent and talk about the ACC about 10-15 years ago. Clemson, and occasionally FSU, wins the NC. Does the league get "dinged" because they beat Wake Forest and not Oklahoma? And if the answer is "sort of", does that not go away because the "true" winner is now in the playoffs today? My point in all this blather is that they can't let go of their silly ideas of who is more prestigious, even though they make boatloads of money via TV contracts. And wake me when a Big 12 or Pac team wins it all. I guess we can say what they are truly doing is to postulate like fighters before their bout in order to get their fans all lathered up. If that is how you conduct business, well it isn't MY game. But if you need the Great Unwashed to write checks they can't afford in order to exist, then... I get the idea that a team may not move forward because the system setup may have made them play a tough away game instead of one in the comfort in their home. How does that change the fact that you have to play increasingly tougher teams to win it all? Ask ND how easy it is to have things go well and win the whole enchilada. Personally, I do not agree with 12 teams as there is a disparity on teams that should not happen (I want 8 and not 16 - TOO many games). Realize, if you have a functioning brain, that THE reason for a playoff instead of experts voting is to prevent the best team who can win the NC to be on the outside looking in. Everything else is basically about the fans wanting more and more product and the TV nuts allowing it. I realize that the selection setup made OSU outside the top 8 and so they WOULD have been on the outside this past season. But in my defense, did they not brain fart like they should not have in the last games before the playoffs? They had a damn talented team but the coaches did not do their jobs. And so, I wouldn't have shed a tear if we had an 8-team playoff last year and ND was the winner instead of OSU.
When ESPN comes off that extra cash... that's when we get that ninth game. And that's when every SEC football school in our conference gets paid more than the B1G gets for their teams per year. Any other reason for a ninth game is HOG-WASH. The B1G needs to mind their own BUSINESS. The SEC does NOT need their help in this SEC matter.
