Love Colbert. He'll probably profit off the move. His interview with Gary Oldman was pretty funny.

Meh, I appreciate cleverness and sharp-wit, whatever it is. And that ain’t it - imo. But I’ll give it another try.

It does not take 200 people to physically produce an episode of Colbert. Colbert gave that quote recently but that number includes everyone from top to bottom, lowly fact checkers, interns, catering, etc. Some of those people come in, set up the studio rigging at the beginning of season and then depart. A show like that amortizes costs all over the place. So does Gutfeld of course.

Just illustrating there is not a GRAND difference in overhead between these two shows. There is one in QUALITY of course. But that has more to do with the hosts than the crew =)

did you watch The Colbert Report?

Imo Colbert does go after Trump too much. I’m not a fan of Trump to put it mildly, but it’s good to take a break from his latest issues even if being mocked.

I assume they are talking about the Broadcast Network viewership (so basically CBS late show vs NBC tonite show vs whatever ABC airs), although I agree that’s a pretty stupid distinction if cable channels have competing live shows with same or better ratings. “Broadcast” TV is almost meaningless now that you can stream live sports, maybe matters only in those rural areas where internet or cable is still lacking.

    Right here
Look at this board. People are obsessed with politics. Some complain that NYT spins the truth and then religiously read The Blaze. It’s not about truth. It’s about politics. MSNBC and Fox News need to conjure up a new story about the other side every 30 minutes or risk losing their customers. Politics is pervading all facets of life because that’s what we want.

    it’s been ongoing…..

“The late-night hosts like Trevor Noah and James Corden voluntarily announced their departures in 2022….In March, when the host of CBS’s 12:30 show, Taylor Tomlinson, announced that she was departing “After Midnight,” the network canceled the show and said it was no longer reserving the time slot for an original comedic talk show. Other late-night shows — including ones hosted by Samantha Bee and Conan O’Brien — that went off the air in recent years were also never replaced.”

I'm not sure I've watched a late night show since Letterman or Conan left. I think most are suffering the same fate as SNL or the NBA. Anything worth watching you can catch the highlights on YouTube.

yep, begs the question of whether that old late night variety show format being a thing of the past. I doubt the younger crowd has tuned in for a long time as they have other ways to distract or entertain themselves.

You don't think if Carson(was alive), Leno, or Letterman returned with their same comedy, they wouldn't dominate the ratings again?

Good question. And neither had a format of politics.

A lot of this is driven by what is impacting other shows - streaming and other forms of entertainment. When Letterman started he was must-watch for the early 20s crowd. Now that age bracket might instead stare at their phones, TT, etc along with streaming.

And for Gutfeld, his show is an island for maga amongst all other liberal talk shows & entertainment. If I was a fan of a potus I wouldn’t sit thru a host railing on him/her on a daily basis.

Streaming just recently passed cable. Ratings impacts ad revenue.

Unlike when I watched pre-tonight show Conan religiously I'm not awake a 1am on a Tuesday like in college days

I'm pretty sure 95% of my personality was formed watching Late Night with Conan.

I used to stay up and watch in high school. Then wake up at 515am to go to school.....

Yeah if you've ever been to a taping, you see how much of a machine it is. I want to say they did like two nights of material with our audience, and it moved like clockwork.

Carson set the standard. His one liners could be hilarious.
