Either they have reason to believe that a good portion of his base won't like this or they know there's more to come and they're trying to discredit everything up front. Either way, after this is verified to be true, we'll quickly see the pivot from "it's fake" to "so what? It's not that bad."
This was a gift for Trump. The often over applied and misused ‘nothing burger’ is quite fitting here. I’m not saying the story was planted by a Trump operative or coordinated with friendly media, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it were. The timing is suspicious, but that may just be the Trump team using their advance notice of the article to set the table. They already had it turning from a scandal on the left for hiding/protecting traffickers and pedophiles to a hoax that is being perpetuated by the left as an attack on Trump – you could see it happening here in real time. This story gives them all the excuses and rationalizations they’ll need to dismiss the Epstein saga completely. The ‘angry’ MAGA pundits can drop it without losing face and the GOP will use it to justify their votes to block the release of files. I’ll bet even Bongino makes amends and returns in good graces.
I’m no fan of the leftist legacy media, especially the NYTimes, but it’s tough to believe they would stoop to fabricating this story.
It was the WSJ which is more right leaning. My initial reaction was that it was fake, but the WSJ is saying they corroborated with the DOJ

Rubert is good friends with trump for decades. trump tried to get them to not publish it, but failed. This should be very concerning for trump and his followers.

We don’t want to re-victimize the girls so we are removing a little. 8. We are actually removing a lot where there’s no crimes. 9. There are no files. 10. Why do you still care about the files? 11. Are you really still bringing up the files when x, y, and z are happening? 12. The Democrats actually made up the files and we're suing them.
