Yeah, it was crazy. Just couldn't find anything even listed. I gave up after a few weeks so maybe something came available closer to the event.

They must have found some way to block the resale, but that is England

Never thought I'd be nostalgic for scalpers outside the venue but... now that so many places only do electronic tickets... At least they were out there hustling hard instead of running internet bots!

But at least i can get scalped from my living room. No need to drive to another city with a hotel booked and no tickets.

I’m not savvy enough to know whether or not I’m buying a bogus ticket from a street scalper. I’m not opposed to paying at or above face value, depending on the game and where the seats are, but the prospect of giving a guy hundreds of $$ just to be turned away at the gate concerns me greatly. Any of y’all want to share how you deal with this problem?

Tix are digital now. Don’t give them cash until the tix are in your wallet. It’s not legal to sell over face value within a certain distance of most venues. Usually 1000ft or so.

Majority of this stuff is done through websites. I don’t see many folks selling tix outside any of our venues anymore. At the cws, there was a wall of scalpers at the 1000ft mark around the stadium. All the corners a couple blocks away had people selling tickets, mostly standing room only for quadruple+ face value. You’ve almost always been better off securing tix before you arrive. Especially if you want to see kickoff/tip/first pitch.

This really doesn’t answer my question. I know the tickets are digital. That doesn’t make them for sure legit. If anything, that’s probably the biggest problem. And just because I take a digital ticket and put it in my iPhone wallet doesn’t make it legit either. You can still put a bogus digital ticket in your wallet, right?

So what practical verification steps are out there to help safeguard against downloading a bogus digital ticket from some scalper’s phone? Or off a website?

    Thanks for the dialog Paid

The ticket comes to the wallet via the ticketmaster (or gator app which runs through ticketmaster) app. I said once it’s in your wallet, but should have said once it’s loaded into your ticketmaster account. It disables the ticket on the outgoing account and enables it on the incoming account. I do not believe this process is easily duped. The only way i see someone getting duped is buying paper tickets or not finishing out the receipt process before leaving the exchange. Make sure you actually have the ticket(s). The ticketmaster app is not going to let you run fake tickets through it.

As with any other transactions you might make with a street vendor, pay attention. Don’t let a fast talker grab your cash and walk away before you verify your purchase.

Thanks Paid, so this raises the question in my mind - what are the scalpers actually selling? If every ticket has been reduced to a QR code, are they transferring “tickets” from their phone to mine? That would seem to be maximum risk - obviously. But they aren’t peddling Ticketmaster tickets, right?

I haven’t bought tickets from a scalper since before everything was digital. I guess I don’t know how they’re selling their seats

All uf’s tix run through ticketmaster now. Original sales and secondary sales. If you transfer them to another person, that is the platform used to make the transfer, even of you buy them on stubhub, in person, or through facebook or some other method. Even if you’re giving them away, this is how you move them. You don’t have to pay fees unless you’re using ticketmasters (or another sites) platform to sell them for you.

You have to pay attention, yes. Just like with any other digital transactions, they can send spoof emails that look legit. Make sure you’re all logged into your ticketmaster account before the transaction and pay attention when you’re going through the process. Make sure you receive them and make sure they show up in your ticketmaster account.

They pretty much own the ticket market. I hardly get tickets for anything anymore that don’t run through their platform. Its neat that they give the schools and venues their own apps, but they’re not much more than a ticketmaster app with a different logo. The process for transferring tickets on the gator app is pretty much identical to using the ticketmaster app, other than the gator app will only show gator stuff.

I’m guessing you probably use the gator app, but if you log into your Ticketmaster account, all of your gator tix will be there too.

Yup, the gator app is ticketmaster and vice a versa. I went to a George Strait concert in Atlanta a few years back and pulled up the tickets on my UF Gator App on my phone....no need to download both apps and take up phone memory.

For some reason, I couldn’t get my tickets to the bowl game to open in the gator app last year, so I thought maybe tickets for non-uf campus games required the ticketmaster app still. Maybe just a one off glitch though.

Now that you’re saying it, I am pretty sure I used the gator app in omaha.

The only other issue is some tix arent released until right before a concert to help keep down resale. I buy some from stubhub and they come at the last minute. Its not a scam, its just that way. Stubhun guarantees the money back if they dont transfer but ive never had a problem.

A scalping situation would generally be last minute. With stubhub, they’re guaranteeing the purchase. With some guy on the street, like we’re talking about, you should verify your purchase before walking away. If the venue is not using the ticketmaster system, then most of what I was talking about is not relevant. When I jumped in, I believe what was being discussed was scalping or buying UF tickets outside the stadium before the game. For that scenario, what I said is relevant.

The college World Series thing is definitely a point. I haven't held a paper ticket in my hand since I don't know when. It's all Ticketmaster StubHub vivid seats or whatever. Even bright is the only one I use where you sometimes have to just go will call. the only issue I've ever had is I bought James Taylor tickets to the wrong venue and had to buy the right ones and could not sell the ones I bought without losing money.

the only successful scam that I know of happening with electronic is if you take a picture of your barcode and post it to your friend, scammers can do the print at home tickets and get in before you get there making your ticket invalid.
