HOME COLLEGE Former Florida Gators Ace Has Tossed 18-Straight Scoreless Innings HUGH GREEN UPDATED: JUL 10, 2025 11:15 PM EDT Sproat has been on a tear over his last three starts for the Syracuse Mets, posting 18 scoreless innings while allowing just seven hits. This incredible stretch culminated on Thursday, as he tossed a season-high seven innings, giving up only three hits and one walk against the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.
The Mets have had their share of injuries to their starting pitching but Sproat got off to such a terrible start in triple A (ERA of almost 6.00 before his recent streak), he never got the call up. Good to see him have some recent success and hopefully he gets a call up after the All Star break.
18 scoreless innings is impressive at any level. I always thought Orel Hershiser 59 innings streak was unbelievable.
I’ve always thought that Bob Gibson’s 1968 season was unbelievable—Geez, MLB lowered the mound because of his dominance.
No mention of Denny McLain and winning 31 games? A great friend of mine was a HUGE Cardinals fan. Everybody thought that McLain would dominate for Detroit. Instead it was Mickey Lolich that won three games. All I had to push his button was to whisper "Mickey Lolich". LOL.
I got to see Gibson live in Atlanta the summer of 1968. Naturally he was on a level that night that few ever knew. This was back when once you got into the ballpark you could just about go anywhere that wasn’t on the field. I was there with the Post 30 American Legion team I played summer ball on the summers between my HS years. Some of us went down to the bullpen Gibson warmed up in. From the time he pulled his jacket off and stretched we were right there. He threw a total of 100 pitches (getting loose to game ready) put his jacket back on and walked to his dugout. I was soaking it up!
Great story! Was that before they moved to the new Atlanta-Fulton County circle from home of the Crackers?
It was Atlanta-Fulton County stadium. I think they had been there for maybe a couple of seasons at that point. (Sorry for hi-jacking the thread)
