Based on the following passage, I agree with your first two sentences and disagree with the next three.

    Luke 13:1-4
"There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? 3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? 5 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

"Condemned " was too strong a word choice. Maybe it was an emotional reaction from me in hindsight however she "wants people to consider these things before yall go and put your boots on and go search for these people" (paraphrased). While leaving some room for interpretation, her need to focus and highlight her own bias at this moment is abhorrent given the fact that children are many of the missing.

I dont set my bar to the lowest common denominator. In my last two shifts at work I've been called cracker and cursed at while responding to 911 calls. Conversely, I've been in homes with black crew members where there was palpable racial tension and in some cases overt derision to our minority personnel as well.

What i can tell you is that despite the occasional and sometimes significant racial tensions in our field when it comes time to search a burning building, extricate patients from vehicle crashes, or work a medical patient in their last moments, I have never seen a moments hesitation or lack of empathy for the people in need.

I dont deny that attention to various matters is often influenced by demographics of the parties involved. People gravitate towards people they relate to generally speaking. Doesn't make it right or wrong but that is the nature of the masses. These ghouls transcend human tendencies with their comments.

Liberal governance/DEI hires led to the LA Fire catastrophe.

Stupid conservative governance/DEI hires led to the catastrophic loss of life from the floods in Texas.

I've only investigated this story for 5 minutes but I'd bet money the above is true (if I had to bet on it).

Edited the post to reflect that Kerrville Texas is probably conservative/Republican. I still think the government made incompetent decisions like we saw in LA related to the fires.

My prediction is the blame for the catastrophic loss of life will eventually fall on local politicians, not on NOAA getting less money.

    I'm a good guesser

That guy said it's "all white" summer camp and was attacked for it ... I think it's worth looking into if it's true or not. But I can see why basing your attacks on actual facts might be a "problem" for MAGA. In my initial search, I've completely whiffed on finding a pic that shows a black camper there, after scrolling through hundreds of pics. Weird. Black people can be Christian, too, right?

Regarding the LA fires, we know firefighters should have worked double shifts and been pre-deployed.

Regarding the Texas floods, why weren't firefighters and rescue specialists pre-deployed?

In such a flood prone area, why wasn't, there a siren warning system? (Or was there?)

Pre-deploy to every flood prone area whenever it rains? That’s a waste of money.

Early warning systems would have probably helped. I suspect it was considered at some point but cost probably contributed to it not being done.

I live near an area that is prone to flooding. After 2 floods in 3 years they finally fully implemented an early warning system. Total cost for the early warning system and other flood mitigation projects was $250M.

    Early warning systems were considered.
    https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/06/us/texas-flood-warnings-sirens.html

Eight years ago, in the aftermath of yet another river flood in the Texas Hill Country, officials in Kerr County debated whether more needed to be done to build a warning system along the banks of the Guadalupe River.

A series of summer camps along the river were often packed with children. For years, local officials kept them safe with a word-of-mouth system: When floodwaters started raging, upriver camp leaders warned those downriver of the water surge coming their way.

But was that enough? Officials considered supplementing the system with sirens and river gauges, along with other modern communications tools. “We can do all the water-level monitoring we want, but if we don’t get that information to the public in a timely way, then this whole thing is not worth it,” said Tom Moser, a Kerr County commissioner at the time.

Fort Collins is currently doing a massive flood prevention project. It's expensive & I guess mostly to protect property.

Fort Collins aims to fix flooding with big money and a big dig

In Old Town Fort Collins, just a few blocks from the heart of downtown, crews are moving a massive amount of earth. The multimillion dollar project is the third most expensive in the city’s history. They’re installing a new system to control floodwater. If it goes according to plan, most people won’t even notice it working.

The Oak Street Stormwater project is designed to reroute heavy rains around the homes and businesses of Old Town through a giant underground pipe.

“Flooding can be devastating to communities, and it's been devastating in Fort Collins before,” said Heather McDowell, the project’s manager. “It's really easy to forget that when we have a couple of dry years and when we're fighting fires up in the mountains. But flooding happens too”

The city ran a study in 2019 to assess potential damages that would be caused by a major flood in downtown Fort Collins. They found that over 500 buildings would be inundated, causing about $150 million in repair costs. This project, which will cost the city $42 million, aims to avoid that entirely.

I've been playing 5 minutes chess games. Seemed like it would be fun to post with almost no research (5 minutes or less)

Regarding your post, how expensive should it be to have a really loud siren system installed by the private sector? Somebofy watches the rainfall and if it looks like things could get crazy he pushes the button and the sirens go off. Seems like you could get a lot of bang for $5M

There used to be a guy who was born in Bucharest who went to UF and had a chess column in the Alligator (student newspaper,). I think he became a grandmaster at age 14 or 15. Several years before my time. Gabriel Schwartzman. He quit chess in his early 20's. Chess is kind of a BS game, depends too much on having an awesome memory (per Bobby Fischer). That's why Fischer invented Fischer Random. Bobby died age 64, the same number of squares on a chessboard.

Regarding Hans Niemann, my guess is he cheated (95% confidence).

    Interesting.

Jessica Tarlov is not letting Jesse Watters’ hypocrisy surrounding the Texas floods and 2024’s Hurricane Helene go unnoticed.

“I don’t think that talking about preparedness or what might have helped qualifies as impugning the memory of those that have been lost or detracting from the thoughtful conversation that needs to take place because this river has been flooding for a very long time,” Tarlov said. “We were here around the table when hurricane Helene struck. I did not hear Jesse Watters saying that Donald Trump should stop spreading lies about the Biden administration and the FEMA funds.”

She continued: “Trump came out and he said ‘they’re giving your FEMA dollars to illegals, they’re housing them with your FEMA dollars.’ Then he said you’re only going to get $750 from FEMA – which was a complete lie and there are Republican officials who have testified to the fact that people did not get their FEMA assistance because of what Trump and other Republicans were saying.”

Tarlov concluded that GOP legislature rejected “over $54 billion in identified needs in terms of disaster resistance” that could have helped mitigate the damage from the Texas floods.

A phone alert system (like Amber alert) would be a good way to notify people to flee. Phone alarm goes off and you get a text message. Maybe they had such a system

Mind boggling that in the cel phone era, we're talking about hours notice of freaking floods along known flood paths, being insufficient. Mind boggling.

Even tornadoes, with who the hell knows which way they're going, you get minutes warning. Wild fires, about as unpredictable, too.

But "flash floods"-- hours notice--cel phone era--the US???

Seems like this was easily avoidable and foreseeable, imho.
