I find it interesting that both of you accused the other of being in an echo chamber and also criticized the other for making the same claim back.

I am no expert on you or anyone, but I would say that there isn’t a poster on here, myself included, who couldn’t benefit from more honestly listening to opposing perspectives.

Why is it that you see this interview as humiliating to Bernie, and others thought it was a good interview? This question deserves real consideration. The answer could be because those other guys are biased, but if that is our answer every time, we’re are assuredly biased ourselves.

I think anyone posting here gets an "opposing perspective" of some sort, and I think the main 'benefit' to that is that it tends to increase partisanship or ideological commitments - negative polarization. 'Low information voters' are the least committed and most persuadable people.

You’re right, wgb, that if we force a MAGA supporter to watch Rachel Maddow, they will likely come away more entrenched in their own opinion. That’s not what I’m advocating though.

I am suggesting we should better consider why these people came to divergent beliefs. Looking at this forum, I see that the most frequent answers fall into the holy triumvirate: Those people are either stupid, evil, or crazy. Logically, these can’t be the only options, but more importantly, if we allow ourselves to be satisfied with these explanations, we will never progress.

I’ve stopped caring why people believe what they believe politically. Honestly it’s not worth it. Angry, sad, insecure, self-righteous, scared, guilty, small dick energy, all of the above, I just don’t care why anymore. I am often curious WHAT people believe hence why I come here, but why? Nah. We are all full of shit on the why imo. Myself included obviously.

I think most people have maybe a small range of things they actually know a lot about, and are ideologically committed to as a matter of principle. The rest is just formed by the political preferences the other things have led you to. If you became a Republican because you were passionately against abortion as a matter of religion, you probably didn't know shit about immigration, but voting Republican and taking cues from politicians probably turned you into a nativist, or at least convinced you that immigration was a big problem in the first place.

I feel like stupid, evil, crazy covers a lot TBH (since those things are largely subjective) - "Through careful study and reflection on the issues and life experience, I became a fascist" = still falls under evil IMO! If you think tax cuts increase revenue, I'm just gonna think you are stupid no matter what level of education you have obtained. As to why people become stupid, evil or crazy, I've got historical materialism to fall back on. Perhaps others have a more spiritual or metaphysical view of the why. For the most part, I think most of the people here have a larger world view or framework in how they understand things.

Haven't watched it, but laughed when I read: "entire compilation" .

Pretty sure a "compilation" means it is not "entire".

He leans conservative, but "full on right wing" is only the case if you are so far left that you think the middle is right wing.

I don't know how his guests compare now to some time ago. It seems for a long time, it was mostly not political. Just meathead stuff mainly, people who were into UFC and stuff. I suppose as he's gotten more influential, its more of a place for people in politics to go to. Also, my suspicion is that the majority of his regular most dedicated listeners aren't under 30, or possibly even under 40. They fit the demo of the OP. Could be a case of the listeners driving the content, a symbiotic relationship.

Indeed these labels must have some validity in some circumstances. A child molester is evil, and someone who believes the Earth is flat is ignorant.

But there is problem in assuming that it is always the other people that are stupid, evil, or crazy. No two people in the world agree on everything, suggesting that there is a maximum of one person on Earth who is not stupid, evil, or crazy. It is unlikely that one of us happens to be this person. We ourselves understand things through our own worldviews, so how can we know that we aren’t the stupid one? And undoubtedly, our detractors think just this.
