It was never realistic to expect titles. They’re special, and for UF it’s been like catching lightning in a jar. We’ve had 3 National Championships, and 8 conference championships in our 92 years in the SEC, and they came courtesy of Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer, and a collection of generational players like Tim Tebow and Danny Wuerffel. It’s been 17 years since our last one. Everything has to come together for this shit to end up in a championship. Generational coaches, generational players, and a shitload of luck. Enjoy the ride and Go Gators
This is all true but Spurrier and Meyer probably couldn't do what they did back then in today's climate without the money
Maybe, maybe not. Before NIL, paying players was a luxury only a select few schools were allowed to have. Now everyone can do it. Maybe Bear Bryant wouldn’t have won so many championships with a little more competition. It’s always changing - and always will be
Im fairly certain Urbs was paying too. At least he had players saying so. It was peanuts compared to now though. Most schools are priced out and the select few are probably spending more than is being generated. Its a really bad system. It always has been dirty but now its just over the top buying wins. We have the foxes guarding the henhouse now so until the boosters tire of being fleeced, we are stuck with it. Theres some deep pockets though and 30-40 mil a year may not even scuff their bank accounts.
No doubt - but I’ll bet Ray Graves wasn’t. That’s my point. Look what happened when Pell tried to. Meanwhile Bryant kept on keeping on
Things have certainly changed. Duck Dynasty dude chose not to go to the NFL because the pay sucked and it was during hunting season. That was long ago in a galaxy far far away.
UGA and UF have very similar athletic donation budgets according to google. They seem to be competing for championships so why can’t we? Serious question.
They aren’t competing with Stanford for Olympic sports. Our non-revenue athletes NIL dwarfs what they offer. We seem to be hellbent on being fair and competitive in all the stuff that doesn’t matter.
L Our NIL is overwhelmingly football and men's hoops....baseball is decent but middle of the SEC, other sports are a drop in the bucket
