I would say the left is playing with fire here. The worry on the left is candidates like Crockett, AOC, Bernie being the loudest in the room. You add this guy. Free busses, free healthcare for kids, city run grocery stores ( say goodbye to Bodegas). Encouraging global intifada, Exact quote “ no I don’t like capitalism”. The national perception is the left is lurching further left. Sure plays well in SFO and NYC, but it’s very concerning for battleground state residents as they want no part of any of the above platform
Maybe you’re right idk the guy at all he’s an nyc candidate so I haven’t seen much. But if he can connect with working people there what if he can connect with working people other places? It’s been a big issue for Dems for a while now.
It's not 'the left' doing this. It's the voters in New York. But your basic point is right, I think. It will hurt the Democrats nationally, primarily because Republicans are much better at making AOC the face of the Democrats than Democrats are at making MTG the face of the Republicans.
Been saying for years the push back that comes as the wealth gap grows for the top 1% is coming. The younger generations can't afford starter homes or health insurance working a full time job. Why would you be a fan of capitalism when capitalism hasn't given you it's perks? I don't agree with it. but the movement is definitely coming until there change.
Fair point, and yes they have lost the union, blue collar constituents, but in my humble opinion you don’t appeal to working class people by saying ‘ vote for me because I’ll give you more free stuff ‘. Working people want work, not free busses and city grocery stores and those middle class working people can see right through it. It’s not dissimilar to the border miscalculation by the left. They thought the message of come here and get free stuff would resonate, but by a swing of 40%, voting immigrants were very opposed to that message.
I meant more and more evidence seems to indicate you can’t get out of democratic primary without saying looney stuff like this guy is saying. Hence the national Perception they the left is lurching left.
If that were true and given that there are hundreds of Democratic primaries every year, why would you need to keep using AOC as an example? She's been in Congress for six years. Should be tons of others.
I would counter and say it’s not that capitalism failed them but more of financial illiteracy. So many kids expect 100k salary to start with a useless degree and entitled attitude. They don’t grasp that if you load yourself up with debt that it limits your options substantially. If you graduate with 250k in debt and the first things you do are take on a $700 car payment, load up on new furniture at 20% then no you aren’t to qualify for a 500k starter home that’s 2 blocks from your new job. Our 2 young kids God Parents both graduated from UGA. Both PhD. Both great jobs, They chose to rent a small apartment 20 miles north of Atlanta and both are still driving the same car they drove in undergraduate. Smart kids, humble , paying off their debt and well ahead of their peers in fiscal literacy. They both come from blue collar backgrounds.
well the thread was about the NY primary and the lunacy this guys is spouting and how it takes up all the news bandwidth
blue collar people want what everyone wants. More money. Good schools for their kids. Affordable housing. Retirement. Cheap and easy commutes. Safe neighborhoods. Etc. this dude has done so well in nyc because his message had resonated with those people.
Yes, I know. And I agreed with how it will play nationally, especially with the GOP effort to centerpiece it. What I questioned was your claim about every Democratic primary. This is one race.
I know plenty of students that became successful graduates in Florida with no debt and it took them years to build up the cash for a first house. It’s not financial illiteracy my goodness. Maybe for some people. But for most, without help from family, it’s tough to put together the money you need for a down payment until they hit that second or third job after graduating. God only knows what it’s like for people without degrees. I assume it’s worse unless they’re in a skilled trade or had a great business idea.
Love the Bee Democrats Discover Innovative Strategy Of Promising Free Stuff To Stupid People NEW YORK, NY — Democratic Party strategists were thrilled this week after they stumbled upon an innovative new strategy of winning elections by promising free stuff to stupid people. According to Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, the bold new strategy of showering idiots with promises of free stuff could be "a total game-changer" for the party. "Hear me out, guys — what if we just tried promising uninformed, ignorant people that we'll give them free stuff if they vote for us?" Mandami reportedly asked at a campaign brainstorming meeting. "Why haven't we tried this before? Come on, people. Get your stuff together and let's start overpromising free handouts to all the morons out there — we'll win in a landslide!" High-level Democrats said that the new campaign strategy just might end up changing the party's entire approach to politics.
I would add that his message also resonated with younger voters for the same reason especially with respect to affordable housing. Although it shouldn't matter rationally, Mamdani's self-label as a "Democratic Socialist" could hurt Democratic candidates in swing districts in South Florida. Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez and Daniel Ortega all abeled themselves as socialists. Candidates representing a party in which high profile politicians (Mamdani, Bernie Sanders and AOC) also label themselves as socialists will not play well among voters of Cuban, Venezuelan and Nicaraguan decent. In close elections it could make a difference.
Cuomo killed so many elderly people in New York as Governor that it seems that this vote for Mamdami was more of a vote against Cuomo than it was support for the unabashed communist.
What should the left be worried about exactly? You have a more incompetent babbling baboon than Trump waiting in the wings in case the left really screws things up?
