GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida star point guard Walter Clayton Jr. produced the most highly-decorated season in school history to lead the Gators to a 2025 national title. His record-setting play earned him a first-round selection in the 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday. Clayton was picked No. 18 overall by the Washington Wizards. Washington traded the pick to the Utah Jazz, per reports. Utah sent No. 21 and second-round picks to Washington for Clayton, according to Shams Charania of ESPN "Clayton averaged a Florida-record 23.9 points in his seven NCAA Tournament games as a Gator after transferring from Iona. His 167 NCAA Tournament points rank third all-time in UF history with just seven games played. Every other Gator in the top 10 played at least 13 tournament games." WOW!! Only one of Walter's NCAA tournament games was not THIS year!
Broome was a handful in college, but he also got all the whistles. He could bull his way to the hoop all game, all season, and not get called for it. That's why he looked genuinely shocked that he got called for running right through Condo in the Final Four.
As I said I just re-watched that game and the charging call you mentioned was a big one. As you say broome was shocked. But I re-watched it about 5 times and it was as blatant of a charge as you will ever see. Not even close. I'll say it again- Clayton was head and shoulders better than Broome!
23.7ppg is impressive. But I think in terms of the total points list, that “did it in just 7 games” is one of those quirky stats. Florida didn’t have a lot of NCAA success before Donovan, and Donovan ran a system where he wanted all 5 starters to have pretty equal scoring. So even though he surely had guys capable of dropping 30, that’s not really what his style of play called for. Plus as great as Donovan’s successes were, he did have that long stretch of 1st weekend exits. So only anyone associated w/ the 04’s and that Patrick Young led group were really piling up “games played” in NCAA tournaments to even compete with that show Clayton put on.
