ok. I don’t have the facts on this. I don’t intend to read his b.s. A threat on campus safety is probably a slippery slope and has layers of interpretation.

Uhh…. This guy does both, Wrote a paper promoting white nationalism and posted antisemitic garbage on social media. Says a lot that are doing your best to defend him and the people who give him awards…. I’m sure mien kampf was “widely acclaimed” by some, too.

You don't think it crossed the line? I am all for free speech, but this might have went to far.

Lol! How have i "defended" this guy???

Says a lot more about your desperate attempt to slay a strawman, than to actually read and respond to what I actually wrote.

Crossed a line socially? Sure. Ostracize him for being a Nazi. Crossed a line legally? I'd say no. But that's assuming he didn't directly threaten anybody. The tweet doesn't suffice imo.

If this guy was a 3rd grader writing a “why the holocaust was actually a good thing” essay it would set off alarm bells and his parents would be called in - the school would probably demand mental health checks. Why would we coddle this type of nonsense from a 30 year old “adult”?

I get that the idea of govt punishing speech is a slippery slope esp with any cutoff being inherently arbitrary, but similar to those neo-Nazi’s from a few years back I don’t think we need to coddle trolls on college campuses especially when it comes to things like Nazi’sm or Slavery. The govt can’t criminalize it, but a University can certainly make it part of their code of conduct. A private university could no doubt give this guy the boot if not disavow their degree, UF being a public/state entity is the only thing making it even slightly dicey as a restriction on speech.

Actually, You are stating your opinion when you say the paper is "prolly not all that offensive"... Not surprising given your past that you would defend the guy like that. I mean, the paper was about how non white Americans should not be viewed as equals under the law, so that fits right in with typical MAGA views. Take your L, and keep backpedaling...

Agreed but I partially agree with the Dean. Your grade should not be dependent on the graders POV but based on your argument made and other academic criteria (eg Pro-life vs Pro-choice). Where I disagree is giving this an award. Also I suspect that most law firms will stay away from someone like this.

As a lawyer and graduate of Florida undergrad, I don’t have a problem with the premise that the framers of the Constitution intended “We the People” to include only white men. It certainly took about 140 years for women to be able to vote and about 190 years before minorities were able to vote through Constitutional Amendment. I personally believe a constitutional amendment wasn’t required as everyone had the right to vote as the Constitution was drafted.

Freedom of expression and ideas certainly should be protected, especially in a college setting. Colleges have an obligation to encourage the exchange of ideas and beliefs regardless if they are popular. Otherwise, we are going to start banishing and ostracizing people from college, including law school for their beliefs? That will not end well. Certainly that is a violation of our Constitution as amended.

One of the problems in this country is people are no longer able to have a real debate on issues and a discussion of beliefs regardless if you are liberal or conservative. Liberals refuse to have a rational discussion with conservatives. Instead it usually resorts to banning the individual with personal attacks due to being “woke”. Which is also a violation of free speech, which they claim they are trying to protect.

I don’t agree to ban him from campus unless he did something more that discriminated against minorities including women on campus, other than expressing his views.

I have no opinion with the award without reading the paper. It seems the premise is valid, but I am unsure if he crossed any lines as the paper was drafted.

Regardless of the original framers, some of whom owned slaves, we have since amended the constitution and have passed additional laws which make race or religious based discrimination illegal. So this guy is advocating things that are actually illegal and overwhelmingly rejected by all but fringe elements.

I mean sure a person can argue that they were just making an “academic” argument about changing the law, that we should return to race based discrimination. Oppression and slavery is a good thing! I guess “edgy” people could write all sorts of crazy provocative papers under the guise of academic freedom. “Rape should be legal!” “It’s pre-emptively justified to murder Nazi’s in self defense”. Etc. Just comes off as unserious and unfortunate UF Law even has to waste time or associate with it.

Making an educated guess, not stating an opinion. As I clearly stated:

    I. Have. NOT. read. The. Article.

...and therefore can not formulate an opinion about it.

Just figure if it was recognized with awards, it mustn't have been that offensive or bad.

...but of course, you, being a typical libby with Atticus Finch syndrome, think the rest of the world is racist, and in need of your super hero Atticus Finch enlightenment.

    Lol!

You think people really have to search hard for racism in a paper about how non-white citizens should not be considered equal under the constitution written by a guy that says Jews should be exterminated by all mean necessary? Maybe you SHOULD. READ. THE. PAPER. before you start defending the guy, hmmm?

    Again....

    Not. Defending. The. Guy.

    Nor the article.

Just *guessing* the article must not have been that bad.

Seems he woulda' gotten severe blowback, not awards...or "a top academic honor" for that article.

Also see i thought he graduated.

Seems he was trespassed as a student.

I imagine it will be kinda hard to graduate from a school when you've been trespassed from it...

But clearly, UF not approving of his crap.

Depends on who is given the award and why ... The professor walked it back saying he gave the award based on how well it was written not the ideology... you'd know that if you READ. the. ARTICLE. before defending the guy.
