I'm on record here saying that overall LGBTQ issues are a winner for MAGA and a loser for Dems. Highlighting every 7th grade gender curious 2nd place discus thrower is political gold.

But this. This seems a bit much.

Announced in the middle of Pride Month, the federal government has decided to shut down the suicide hotline created in 2022 to give specialized services to the community.

Sounds like they are just not going to have a special line but will still be taken care of like anyone else. The article says "Everyone who contacts the 988 Lifeline will continue to receive access to skilled, caring, culturally competent crisis counselors who can help with suicidal, substance misuse, or mental health crises, or any other kind of emotional distress," the statement continued. "Anyone who calls the Lifeline will continue to receive compassion and help." I don't know why anyone should need a special suicide hot line based on what sex they are attracted to.

"like everyone else" is the key phrase. This was a specialized service for a specialized need.

And why do they need something different than anyone else?

I would love to see the breakdown and understand how this move makes any sense from a fiscal sense. If it does, ok, great. Otherwise, this is just typical "Republicans being spiteful hatemongers" stuff.

If you twist your knee, do you go to a cardiologist?

Because the reasons that LGBTQ people commit suicide differ from the general population?

Seemingly, one would either go to their PCP or an ER, depending on the severity of the injury. Then, the injured person would be referred to an orthopedic then possibly PT. I don’t believe anyone goes directly to an orthopedic unless they have a prior relationship for the same or similar injury.

Why can’t a young person with mental health issues be treated in a similar fashion? Further, if the impacted organization truly provides an important and valuable service to the specific community identified in the article, why can’t it raise funds to continue operations from private sources?

I worked for the Alachua crisis center. We helped everyone through a suicide hotline.

Stick to the IT topics. You don’t have a clue on this one.

If you have a “specialized” hotline for each specific need, it would be impossible to manage efficiently. One hotline is sufficient for those needing help and if not, there are other resources available also.

Not a Trump fan but do support his eliminating and/or reducing unnecessary federal programs and this is one of them.

I am sure there are many different reasons people commit suicide. As long as the people answering the phone are trained they should be able to help straight and gay people.

So issues like family rejection are common for non-lgbtq people that cause high risks of suicidal ideation?

The reasons people have suicidal thoughts, are often feeling hopeless, alone, helpless, angry, numb…and people who do not feel heard.
Sounds like feelings ALL humans can relate to doesn’t it?

    Wow.
    Are you serious.
Of course all people can have these issues.
No one can ever walk in another persons shoes. But we can listen to others and empathize with common emotions.
It’s the best any therapist can do…allow someone hurting the chance to be heard.

That's great. Thank you for doing that.

I'm surprised that you don't understand that mental health providers have specialties...

So what is the rate of family rejection in straight, cis-gendered populations vs. LGBTQ communities? And are they often rejected specifically due to their sexual orientation or gender identity?
