Consumer prices rose less than expected in May as President Donald Trump’s tariffs had yet to show significant impact on inflation, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday.

The consumer price index, a broad-based measure of goods and services across the sprawling U.S. economy, increased 0.1% for the month, putting the annual inflation rate at 2.4%. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for respective readings of 0.2% and 2.4%.

The consumer price index rose 0.1% in May from the prior month. Economists polled by Dow Jones expected CPI to rise 0.2%. Core CPI, which strips out food and energy prices, also increased 0.1%, less than expected.

Not rooting for a recession, but the below pretty much sums up my concerns. Maybe tariffs get dropped before there are impacts, maybe they don't. Maybe they get struck down by the courts. It's just common sense that if significant tariffs stay in place that price increases will follow. Not sure why that's controversial.

“Today’s below forecast inflation print is reassuring – but only to an extent,” said Seema Shah, chief global strategist at Principal Asset Management. “Tariff-driven price increases may not feed through to the CPI data for a few more months yet, so it is far too premature to assume that the price shock will not materialize.”

Demand effects for this tariff have been larger than price increases. When demand falls, it puts downward pressure on prices. Demand for goods, those hit mostly by tariffs, have been falling.

When CPI is releasing that they can't collect the information, it is a fair question, although nobody knows whether this will bias the results or simply make them more inexact without bias. BLS not having people to properly collect data is a problem that hasn't been faced before, so the effects are not really known.

Well, then why don't you go learn how to read the reports so that you might become one someday.

Your liberal agenda doesn’t bother me.
Just admit you’re not excited about the report.

Everyone knew you’d down play it.
Doesn’t seem you’re acting the adult you think you are.

Remember that time when you said you were voting against higher taxes and then the guy you voted for personally implemented a massive tax increase that caused a demand shock downward?

Price increases just started hitting the supply chain in the last month. I've seen it myself but so far I haven't seen consumer prices go up in my industry. I'll be interested to see what happens

Florida farmers now plowing over perfectly good tomatoes as Trump’s tariff policies cause prices to plummet

This is the kind of stuff that hasn't hit the end market yet. Personally I'm not sure how we avoid inflation but I hope for the best
