I’m not so sure that pre-WWII Europe was more tyrannical than is much of today’s world. UK has a blasphemy law now.

Bigoted is a broadly used word that can apply to many circumstances.

Same thing happening with the Europeans unfortunately.
If you insult someone in Germany you'll pay a fine.
If you insult them on the internet, the fine is 3X more.
JD Vance was absolutely right to call them out on this.

And if you write an op-ed, they have masked men pull you off the street, incarcerate you, and transfer you around the country quickly to make it hard to find you?

When you’re a guest in another country you should be aware of their rules and “read the room.” Right now it’s probably not a great time to support Hamas in the USA, particularly if you’re here on a student visa. You may be 100% right in your opinion and still be shown the door.

Didn’t seem to bother the person that gave the graduation speech at MIT

Read the room as a concept is not supposed to apply to free apeech. It isn't free to say what we want to hear.

To that particular case, she didn't "support Hamas" (as even the State Dept. admits). She did follow the rules of her visa. The rules here are supposed to include free speech. We changed the rules after she spoke.

Should the Brazilian comic have "read the room" and be sent to jail for things he said too? Or is it only when you don't like the speech that we incarcerate people for their speech?

She spoke freely. Often, doing the right thing, telling the truth comes at a cost. You can speak freely - doesn’t mean you won’t pay a price for what you said.

I don’t know Brazilian law. I think it’s asinine that a comic is jailed for poking fun at someone or something. But, such is the world of “I’m offended….” Interesting WSJ article about “No Contact Orders” which are essentially restraining orders on campus for anyone who wants them against somebody else.

Society cannot handle conflict - every challenge is a “threat” and “toxic”. Grow the F up. If I travel to Russia with 1/2 ounce of weed and am imprisoned. I did it to myself no matter how idiotic the law may be. Know before you go

No, by definition she did not. She was punished by law enforcement for speaking.

Amazing how fast you guys chuck the constitution when you feel like it. The first amendment means that the government is not supposed to punish you for speech that does not infringe on anybody else's rights.

I guess people should be aware that the US, yourself included, no longer believes in free speech and the first amendment and that you had better say what the government wants you to say or else they get to imprison you.

This is some of the craziest stuff I've ever heard ..... when you consider it's coming from a supporter of the fake campus antisemitism crusader, who really just wants to deny 1st Amendment rights at his own whim.

Or maybe you just don't follow the news.

The Chinese influence is taking hold fast in Brazil. They own lots of that farm lands already. And that is something we need to stop and reverse here in the US... right now.
