Maybe. But DeSantis made the statement before the vote with words to the effect that he isn’t the one who appoints Ono, but Ono made some statements that made him “cringe,” thus putting it out there in a very public way that he didn’t want Ono.

Its fairly apt in the sense of The Crucible ... i.e. being a 'witch hunt' ... they know what they are against, and they can spot it anywhere they look. They have no idea what they are for though, which is why they couldnt put forward a candidate that meets their criteria. Because they have no idea what their criteria is.

They are killing careers based on made-up BS. It is definitional McCarthyism, and it is just as evil.

He was rejected because he disavowed nearly every statement, program, and position he’d previously endorsed.

He was rejected for doing the things they wanted him to do to get the job, the things the Republican governor knew about previously when he was offered. If you are making the case that DeSantis is incompetent and didnt vet the guy, we'll listen.

Then why did it get this far? You think they didn't vet him? I don't believe that at all.

Of course, he doesn't. He wants those to march in lockstep with his non-woke policies. Not only is his philosophy with universities, but also the public schools across the state. He's nominated one of his cronies to be the next Education Commissioner:
“Stasi Kamoutsas has delivered on important issues like parental rights, school choice, and fighting back against radical ideologies in education,” DeSantis said in a release. As for keeping the public from what should be public documents: "He was also named in 2023 as the person who called then-FDLE Chief of Staff Shane Desguin to deny the promotion and raise for an attorney who disagreed with DeSantis' aides about what parts of the governor's travel records were public information because she "was not on our team," according to former FDLE deputy chief of staff Patricia Carpenter."

DeSantis picks Florida education commissioner. What to know

Guy is an immunologist who has been President of 3 universities. He has supported programs, been part of raising billions, and led a premier land grant university. But his evolution on dei and how he handled student demonstrations without violence is “every statement…and position he’d previously endorsed”? You do realize that the Florida board of governors endorsed dei in 2020 - they should be burned at the stake like witches?

If anti-semitism of Ono is a concern, your take on President Trump saying neo nazis at a campus riot that killed somebody included “good people”?

No, this was politicians making political hay - damn the consequences. Abomination by either party.

Well, let's be frank, they have something very specific that they're looking for in university presidents. Here are some recent hires (off the top of my head). See if there's something common to each:
    UWF - Manny Diaz
    FAMU - Marva Johnson
    FIU - Jeanette Nunez
    FAU - Adam Hasner
    New College - Richard Corcoran
    UF - Ben Sasse

It's unfortunately clear that their "guiding light" when selecting university presidents isn't competence, experience, or qualifications. It's ideology. They are treating the position as part of the spoils system and rewarding party members with the gigs.

We've now moved to a world where "best we can hope for" is a spoils guy (and it will almost certainly be a guy who is white) who just wants to have fancy dinners and go to football games and checks out on the other stuff

    Right here
It is not evil to them. Their morals are dictated by their ideology, so whatever is consistent with their ideology (or worse the words of their leader) is good. Had this board spoke up and downed Sasse, many would have opposite opinions.

I see their major failing as confusing their ideology with truth. Once you believe you hold in your hands ultimate truth, why not annihilate opposing forces? History has of course shown that logical end to this view, a one party state, is a nightmare and not a utopia, but this is rarely clear to party members in the moment.

Really? Marston, Machen, Fuchs, Criser, etc were/are all liberals?? Just curious.

I've been a Gator for a long time and up until recently never knew the political affiliation of any UF President.

They didn't ask any questions about actually running a university. The whole "interview" surrounded ideology. Even when asking about hiring the question was - how would Ono ensure that his hires were ideologically in line with what Florida wants?
