Liberals are more than twice as likely to say they have poor mental health — while conservatives are more than twice as likely to say their mental well-being is “excellent.”

Now, data collected from the 2022 Cooperative Election Study from Tufts University and reported by statistician and political commentator Nate Silver reveals that, among voters who said their mental health was poor, 45% identified as politically liberal and just 19% were conservatives.

Conversely, those who said they had excellent mental health identified as conservative 51% of the time, while 20% were liberal.

The stark lifestyle differences between the two are illuminating.

For one thing, Democrats have ceded a virtual monopoly on pro-family and pro-religious messaging to Republicans — the very values that can promote life meaning, interpersonal connection and mental well-being.

Conservatives traditionally promote family values, and it’s long been known that people who have other people who rely on them, like spouses and children, fare better than people who only worry about themselves.

Is it any wonder liberals are having a mental health crisis?

Yeah, having a "who gives a flip, I'm good and I don't care about anything or anyone else" tends to give folks a rosier disposition.

And lets not forget, ignorance is bliss.

Did they rate their mental well-being as excellent before they ranted about how the woke are trying to make them gay with chemtrails or was it after?

I'm certainly not seeing it here on this message board. Liberals here tend to be fairly well adjusted while right wingers have created their own reality because they can't cope with the actual reality.

I’m sure Donald Trump purports his mental health is great. I think that pretty much summarizes it.

I was listening to a podcast a couple years ago entitled something like how to speak in a way that the other side hears. Hosted by a self professed liberal professor. The amphitheater was full to the brim. The speaker, to make a point, asked all the liberals in the audience to raise their hands…. Of the several hundred attendees, all but a handful raised their hands. The professor laughed and said something like… I totally expected that….one bad thing about being a liberal is that we constantly second guess ourselves and look to forums like this to verify acceptance. He wasn’t being antagonistic to either side.

take that for what you make of it

I’ve told my wife that many times when she gets concerned and emotional about world events - that she’s trying to fit her kind, loving nature into a messed up world. It doesn’t fit.

Saying and having are two different things.

Was going to post the same as I did the last time this issue was raised around six months ago. Americans who self-identify as conservatives very often come from a culture in which the admission of mental health conditions are stigmatized and are much less likely to admit that they have problems than are liberals.

Do conservatives really have better mental well-being than liberals? - PMC
This tendency is exacerbated by the fact that the concept of mental health is often stigmatized by conservatives. While mental health is in part a scientific concept, it has also become politicized [30]. The literature on stigma and ideology is suggestive of a strong association between right-wing authoritarianism, which relates to conservative ideology, and the stigmatization of mental health, such as holding negative stereotypes and distancing themselves from those with mental illnesses [3135]. Many mental illnesses often are stereotyped as dangerous, unpredictable, indicative of bad character, or a sign of personal weakness [3644]. Under a conservative ideology that emphasizes stability, security, and personal agency, the thought of mental illness may invite thoughts of the unknown or appear as a threat to their security. From a personal agency perspective, struggling with mental health such as depression would be viewed as someone’s own doing and not working hard enough to overcome their struggles. Here, stigma serves as a strategy to protect one’s personal values. That is, if people with mental illness are responsible for their illness, they are able to preserve their view of the world [35]. If conservatives associate poor mental health with notions of danger or weakness, they may inflate their own mental health ratings to avoid confronting a negative image of themselves.

Interesting post at Moon of Alabama intersects in interesting ways with this thread. Thoughts, anyone?

The Defeat of The West And Its Dislocation

In 1976 the French anthropologist Emmanuel Todd predicted the down fall of the Soviet Union. In After The Empire, first published in French in 2001, he predicted the (relative) decline of the United States.

In his latest (and last) book, La Défaite de l’Occident (The Defeat of the West), he laments the West's inability to distinguish facts from wishes, as seen in its behavior during the war in Ukraine. Nihilism, a lack of values and of acceptance of reality, has infested western thinking:

Trans ideology is therefore, in my opinion, one of the flags of this nihilism that now defines the West, this drive to destroy not just things and people but reality.

    ...

The downfall of the Soviet Union led to deep psychological and societal dislocations in Russia. The defeat of the West, or 'liberal democracy', is leading to similar consequences in Western societies.

I hate these threads. We have had many almost exactly the same thrown against the left and right through the years.
We have posters on both sides that act unhinged. Some rant about the same thing over and over and over. Others can’t let a thread go by on any topic without blaming the other party.
Trump is a stable genius. Biden was sharper than he had ever been.( maybe Joe S needs to be mentally evaluated after that one?.) Both sides have loons on this board, in the media, and all over social media. Both sides have idiots so invested I their side scoring points or winning they do t care what’s best for America. And it comes across as.. unstable on the best of days.

I enjoy how the right thinks this is some kind of got ya moment. Maybe if they talked about their mental health openly and were honest about it instead of internalizing it “like a real man” they’d stop with the mass shootings over and over again.
