You won't get a complaint from me. It's called self inflicted death. But fear not, there are plenty of rubes who need to root for "their team" regardless of what is the team makeup. That is pretty much what NBA basketball is today.
Ive never gave two shits whst their grades are nor if they actually attended class or just had grades handed to them. Most cant get through admissions without special treatment and arent taking the classes your average student is taking anyway. Ive always thought it was kinda dumb.
I’d like them to go to classes and try to get a degree but that shipped sailed a long time ago (think Deion) Of course, there are always some that earn a degree or come back to obtain one. I’m not in their shoes though and have no concept the difficulty of playing college football and going to class and keeping up your academics. I had it infinitely better/easier than most of these student athletes - my big decisions were who can take me to Gainesville as a snot nosed freshman ( thanks GC Tarponbro!) and where can I buy beer for cheap!
True but I never cared for the ones that scoffed at and flaunted not going to any classes. It’s so different now as we all know too well.
It has to be very difficult to juggle football and academics. I totally understand taking an easier load to stay eigible. I dont think its actually fair to say these kids get an education while playing as they dont have the same opportunity as kids who have nothing but class and have the time to put the work in. The degrees are not the same. Players should get full scholly for four years after football for the ones that want a top notch education.
That’s a reasonable option, far too reasonable for it to be universally enacted. But, each school could do it surely.
Yes, we can think and thank Deion. Actually you could go back to the early 80’s where class attendance at FSU was optional. I have a friend who was friends with Bill Capece back then and he said that Bill rarely went to class after the first week of a semester after he had scouted the talent level of the girls. Later, in the 90’s, Bobby lowered the bar to shooting the president before any disciplinary measures were considered.
Just think about the kids that play for a service academy and all they have to juggle. I hear what you’re saying but the counter argument is that teachers and the university will bend over backwards to accommodate the schedules of the athletes. If you can’t handle going to class and practice, maybe you shouldn’t be at a university. It’s just the only option currently. Things have gotten so skewed. I find it unbelievable that society is structured in such a way that we pay $100 million for someone to play football and that families spend upwards of $20 thousand annually to go to professional football games, many of which go into debt to do so. But, hey, I’m old fashioned and grew up when money was precious.
The kids who choose to go to a service academy are a special breed. The ones who also play football for their service academy are a whole other level of special. That said, I totally agree with your point
Just to follow on that train of thought for a moment that you skillfully transposed against the unaffordability of attending games by fans (the very reason the employment of said $1oo million player is even possible): Salaries are driven by "what the market can bare" and it seems we're pushing the limits on what can be bared! People are pulling the plug on cable due to the high costs and the streaming services are not far behind in price. I remember when I first subscribed to cable it cost less than $10/mo. Have you noticed that your favorite soda costs as much as beer did not long ago! The sponsors of your highly rewarded players have got to be able to fund the cost of advertising which in turn funds sports franchises.
Great points. My cable and internet bill was in the $320 range after fees before I cut the cord. I just couldn’t stomach it anymore.
Good points. Maybe not as true today in the era of compensation (for some) major sport college athletes, in the past, there were so many college athletes whose post high school options were limited. Many of these kids didn’t have two nickels to rub together.
My bride and I went to 5 Guys the other day; 2 single hamburgers 1 regular fries 1 large soda 1 water cup $28+ My wife cannot get a drink next visit! It’s ridiculous and it was crowded.
If you are at a service academy, you got there on academic merit and have enough squirrels running atound up there to get a proper degree. Those kids are military from day one and dont have the freedom tge a regular student has either. Two different worlds.
I had the same experience. 3 "meals" at 5 Guys cost me $48, didn't even have fries with all of them! Sheesh!
$20 for five guys or $13 for micky D's. Ill pay the 20. Its 20 to eat anywhere anymore. I ear out lunch every day for work and you wont get out for less than twenty.
