By many metrics, American girls outperform boys in primary and secondary school, graduating at higher rates and with better grades. Since 1979, most men’s real wages have fallen, while most women’s have risen, and an increasing share of “prime-age men”—those between ages 25 and 54—has given up looking for work. Men die “deaths of despair” from suicide, drugs, or alcohol at nearly three times the rate of women. And often, those hit hardest by these trends are working-class, men of color, or both.
Funny timing. Had a conversation with a couple educators at a bbq last weekend. They were talking about how the school’s robotics and science programs were now dominated by girls and they were trying to get boys more involved again. They started talking about participation in AP courses, but once the conversation shifted from robots, so did I. I wonder if statistics are the same for Asian males and also in general that we make too many excuses for boys.
NYT was tugging the same string last week. It’s Not Just a Feeling: Data Shows Boys and Young Men Are Falling Behind It is interesting that disparities showing dominance of white males has been often used as evidence of an unfair society. One wonders how we should explain a reverse trend.
Its not really a 'reverse' trend if white men continue their dominance. There isn't much evidence to suggest that white men who finish college, etc arent going to continue to control much of the country's wealth, capital and institutions. The larger trend is that the country is becoming less egalitarian as a whole, and that process will only accelerate as the mechanisms of equality continue to be destroyed by conservatives and their enablers. Anyways, it seems like society's response is simply to make things easier for white boys and men, which is basically just how things have always worked. Its not like white supremacy was built on high achievement. Patriarchy is fully functional with dipshit man-babies running it.
They could have just studied my house. The three women rule. Ask our 14 year old son. I always assumed that would be the outcome. He isn't doing as well coming to grips with it!
We may have two different things we are looking at. Eg There used to be an educational gender gap that favored males. There is now an educational gender gap that favors females. Whether or not a few men still control a lot wealth in society, it is true that on average they aren’t doing as well in school.
It’s been going on for years in terms of women outpacing men in college, not just “liberal arts” majors but also including formerly male dominated law school and medical schools where females started to slightly outpace males. I kinda figured engineering was still male dominated, so that trend with robotics is surprising. I don’t know if it’s “alarming” but I guess that depends on the explanation/cause or how wide the gap becomes.
He shouldn't be. Boys have to grow into men working without a net. Girls can decide if they want to work without a net. They have a choice. Boys don't.
Isn't that because they don't need to? Pretty much everything about how society is organized makes it that way, intentional and unintentional.
No one does if they have family connections or money. And if you dont, one income is hardly enough for anyone either.
Interestingly about the study I put in the recap it did show that women who decided to go to college were marrying at a much higher rate 80% vs 50% for non-college. You cant decide to not work if you dont have a partner I guess.
Likely lead to a trend of all male or woman colleges. FSU can get back to their roots. Woman should pay attention. Men without purpose leads to radicalization and violence.
I know plenty of young men that are doing very well. The common theme in most... they were raised in a two parent home that valued discipline, they were expected to work at a young age, they were held accountable for their actions and an education, whether it be college or a trade, was mandatory. If they didn't want to attend college or a trade school, they were encouraged to enlist in a branch of military service.
There are probably many reasons for this but it seems like it comes down to my analysis of football recruiting. In order for our recruiting class to be number 1, some other teams are going to have drop and not do as well. Same thing here, unless you are shooting for 50% of the men succeed and 50% of the women succeed. There isn't room at the top for unlimited number 1 slots.
