The well-respected economist, Thomas Sowell, better known as bootlicker, or Uncle Tom, by our resident left-wing race baiters, has shifted stance on Trump's global trade restructuring.

The whole argument here is that he pulled back on the tariffs and that somehow makes it a smart move lol? Trade deals to negate tariffs that didn't exist before the administration started this. Are you people just confused by all this or do you genuinely fall for it?

When the Congress finally passes the tax cuts outcomes in our trade policy will get much more clear. But... uncertainty is killing the hedge fund managers. Let's just hope we get the outcome we all need.

vegasfox called it correctly. "Art of the deal." Tariffs were a means to an end.

    Right here
First, who has called Thomas Sowell a bootlicker?

Second, I am surprised by Sowell’s stance here, but mostly because it seems early to make a final judgement. One month’s report on inflation doesn’t seem like proof of future results to me, but I appreciate his focus on outcomes. If in a few months, all the tariffs go away, inflation never rises, and we have some new deals in place, I’ll reverse my stance too. It’s worth noting that we have no great rubric for what a good deal looks like, but I’ll be happy if the barriers to trade are lowered.

That said, eliminating trade barriers is opposite of what most Trump supporters have called for, so such a moment might also call for a reversal from the MAGA nationalists in the opposite direction.

Lastly, I don’t know how anyone can listen to Sowell stay perfectly cogent and follow through with his argument for 10 straight minutes without wishing for better powers of cognition from our last two presidents. The guy never once lost his train of thought in this video, and Sowell is 94!

I'm not watching it. But your point is; some guy really likes the tariffs that Trump is abandoning because they crashed the stock market 20% and threatened US consumers with inflation and shortages?

Wow - super important to know this guy's opinion!

Why is Trump abandoning his awesome tariffs then? What a LOSER!

    Doesn’t like Government intervention

In general, I always thought of Sowell as a political economist if that distinction matters.

You don’t have to watch it or agree with it, but that isn’t Sowell’s argument. And Thomas Sowell isn’t just some guy.

Trump is negotiating higher barriers to trade, just not as high of barriers as he initially put up.

To say the endgame is elusive is an understatement. Trump has no stated goal so any outcome can be considered a victory - your note about no rubric for what is a better deal is pretty correct if there is no stated goal.

I will be happy if this whole thing goes up in smoke and he claims victory without changing too much. We already had an incredible access to markets with some specific areas that Trump could have been targeted about. But, nope.

I'm not sure how anyone can determine the outcome of this one way or another when increases in supply chain costs are just now hitting the market.

YouTube put a warning on that video for altered or synthetic content. So it seems like you were taken in by fake content.

Good catch, md. I think I found the original, which is actually from Apr 3. The relevant part of the interview starts in minute 47, and they move on to the next question in minute 50. This is when the video in the OP stops showing Sowell and you just hear him in voice over.

In fact, that YouTube channel has this remarkable disclaimer:

“Disclaimer: In accordance with U.S. fair use copyright laws, the artificially generated portions of our videos do not negatively impact anyone's name, image, or earning capacity. Instead, they celebrate and amplify Sowell's ideas-drawn from his books, interviews, and articles-introducing them to a new generation eager to learn and grow. ALL the opinions on this channel are our own and may not necessarily reflect that of the featured speakers.”

So Sowell’s actual message is something more like “Having to deal with this tariff thing is depressing, but if the tariffs are used in very short duration as a means to something else, then maybe.”

Wow, it almost totally seems like a right-wing poster is peddling outright false information. Unless I'm mistaken.

Who could have imagined this? Wonder if a retraction from OP is coming.

Also, does this still mean that Trump's tariffs are totally and completely awesome?

My guess is that the hedge fund managers are probably making a killing rather than being killed. They're almost certainly capitalizing on the volatility of the markets and Trump's propensity to frequently change his positions.

The bootlicking is amazing. Even when they are critical (like his first video after "liberation day"), you can see that it pains them so much and how much they fear the MAGA looney backlash. It also must suck to be an actual conservative and see conservatism hijacked by the opposite of conservatism. . . with a big, fat moron cherry on top.

One time I spent all afternoon punching myself in the face, really hard. My face as all bruised and bloody. The whole time my friends and family were telling me to stop, and nothing good would come of it, and that I was needlessly hurting myself. But I kept going, telling them it was a great idea, they would see how awesome this is when I’m done. But then I suddenly changed my mind and quit, and they all praises me a genius for stopping.
