I really don’t know what to say. I don’t believe Trump has pricing authority over the drug market in the US much less the world. Quite the break from right wingers crying about non-existent price controls during Covid. There are a lot of democrats who have run into a brick wall of the GOP trying to lower drug prices. Trump’s shortcut to building and executing consensus when there are plenty of partners to do it legally is perplexing. Trump announces he’ll sign executive order that aims to cut drug prices
This looks like a big move. Not sure how it will play out in the 3rd world. The devil will be in the details: Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump For many years the World has wondered why Prescription Drugs and Pharmaceuticals in the United States States of America were SO MUCH HIGHER IN PRICE THAN THEY WERE IN ANY OTHER NATION, SOMETIMES BEING FIVE TO TEN TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE SAME DRUG, MANUFACTURED IN THE EXACT SAME LABORATORY OR PLANT, BY THE SAME COMPANY??? It was always difficult to explain and very embarrassing because, in fact, there was no correct or rightful answer. The Pharmaceutical/Drug Companies would say, for years, that it was Research and Development Costs, and that all of these costs were, and would be, for no reason whatsoever, borne by the “suckers” of America, ALONE. Campaign Contributions can do wonders, but not with me, and not with the Republican Party. We are going to do the right thing, something that the Democrats have fought for many years. Therefore, I am pleased to announce that Tomorrow morning, in the White House, at 9:00 A.M., I will be signing one of the most consequential Executive Orders in our Country’s history. Prescription Drug and Pharmaceutical prices will be REDUCED, almost immediately, by 30% to 80%. They will rise throughout the World in order to equalize and, for the first time in many years, bring FAIRNESS TO AMERICA! I will be instituting a MOST FAVORED NATION’S POLICY whereby the United States will pay the same price as the Nation that pays the lowest price anywhere in the World. Our Country will finally be treated fairly, and our citizens Healthcare Costs will be reduced by numbers never even thought of before. Additionally, on top of everything else, the United States will save TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!
^^ Trump's finally figured out this health care thing. Took a while, but he's got the rightful answer now. Only takes an EO that the United States will only pay the same price as the Nation that pays the lowest price anywhere in the World. He should do this with other medical care. Really save us some money. Also; Anyone else willing to bet that he somehow wants to factor these awesome anticipated savings into his tax cut?
I'm also wondering who he is thanking for their attention to this matter. Anyone willing to subject themselves to his Truths on Truth Social? He just throwing out some businessy sounding business jargon, in order to let his supporters know that he really means, uh ..... business?
I guess we'll see just how powerful Big Pharma is. One line of attack against Trump is that this move will raise drug prices in the 3rd world. The legalities of theove could also come into play. Is this part of Stephen Miller's Project 2025? "Therefore, I am pleased to announce that Tomorrow morning, in the White House, at 9:00 A.M., I will be signing one of the most consequential Executive Orders in our Country’s history. While Commie Donnie's at it he should do away with early bird, student, child & senior discounts. & why should Alaskans & Hawaiians have to pay higher prices!!
Based on the previous positions and the record of his own party Trump's proposal isn't going anywhere. Congressional Republicans’ Plans to Hike Up Prescription Drug Prices on Seniors Are Straight Out of Donald Trump’s Project 2025 Playbook - Democrats I realize the source is extremely biased but the record speaks for itself.
Donald Trump's Prescription Drugs Executive Order Explained Trump did not specify which insurance programs would be affected or how many drugs would fall under the new policy. A similar attempt during his first term targeted 50 drugs under Medicare Part B, but a federal court blocked the rule on the grounds that the administration had bypassed necessary regulatory steps. Any new version is likely to face legal hurdles, especially without congressional action. The pharmaceutical industry opposes such pricing rules, warning they would cut into revenue and reduce incentives for new drug development. Democratic lawmakers have supported similar proposals, but Trump's version sets him apart from many Republicans, who are typically skeptical of government-imposed price controls.
even if the insurance paid for it, you paid for it with the cost of the insurance. Just because it was $0 at the counter doesn't mean it was $0 cost to you.
If he wanted to lower prices and force drug companies to sell for less the democrats would be an ally there. They dont mind anti-capitalist ideas if they think there is some good out of it. Generally the republicans dont like those ideas.
I don’t see how this could be implemented. First off, does the govt “buy” drugs? Maybe at the VA? Obviously the VA has its own inventory of drugs at every facility. That isn’t unsubstantial, but if this dictate applies to what the govt actually buys, it pretty much means the VA will be priced out and unable to buy. Medicare doesn’t buy drugs. It doesn’t warehouse them. It reimburses costs. Now the govt can (and certainly should!) cap what it will pay through Medicare, and it can cap what a beneficiary pays (as Biden did with insulin). There may be other drugs like insulin where this makes 100% sense, and that one made sense because insulin was a monopoly-like situation that had seen tremendous price spikes. But just “decreeing” it across the board will likely go over as well as 145% tariffs.
My insurance cost is the same regardless…but since the government pays part of the premium, thank you for the contribution
