Does anyone else find it interesting that Donald Trump, frequently such an outspoken critic of the asylum process for immigrants, is rolling out the red carpet for these Afrikaners? I wonder what's different about them that has him so invested in their struggles that he personally ordered the approval and fast-tracking of these individuals' refugee status? US grants asylum to 54 white Afrikaner South Africans, reports say I'm sure our resident conservatives will be outraged to know that their tax dollars are going to be used to house, clothe and feed these asylum seekers, yes?
THOSE PEOPLE WENT THOUGH THE LEGAL IMMIGRATION SYSTEM... Not the same as ILLEGAL criminal invaders from prisons that broke into our county... You Dems love to purposefully conflate the two very different matters.
You really didn't read the article, did you? The 100,000 people were approved for resettlement, making them legal immigrants.
Evidently, they’re either pretending this isn’t actually happening, or they’re too busy taking advantage of the sweet new trade deals on a new Jag or Mini Cooper.
If I remember correctly, I think Trump has spoken out about the land redistribution plans of the ANC government in South Africa. Also, the current government supporting Hamas is probably not helping them with this White House. South Africa is not in a good spot right now so it is not surprising that some of their white citizens want to immigrate.
The people wanting to immigrate are likely higher educated and higher skilled. That is probably the first argument at the top of the briefing memo. It is something Trump has talked about on this topic. Additionally, I’m willing to bet this WH would argue these people are being persecuted due to their race by their government and actually need asylum. Not sure I buy that argument is better than the claims of some other folks coming to the US but I'm sure that is how this Admin will play it up. Not up to date on the demographics of Venezuela so I cannot accurately respond to that part of your question.
If education matters why is the Trump Administration deporting this guy? Although the Administration hasn't begun the deportation process targeting him yet, his temporary protected status was withdrawn making him eligible for deportation. Fearing deportation, a beloved music teacher gives a final lesson On the day before spring break at Forest Grove Elementary School in Northern Virginia, students bounded through the halls with backpacks swinging behind them. They wiggled in their seats, eager for vacation. But in Jesús Rodríguez’s music classroom, the mood was somber. “Don’t leave us!” one student shouted to Rodríguez after the class sang a medley. Other fourth- and fifth-graders wrapped their arms around one another, wiping tears from their eyes. Rodríguez, a Venezuelan national, was legally living and working in this D.C. suburb under a humanitarian parole program that the Trump administration announced would end early. Without a clear path to stay legally, he decided to leave the United States, worried he could end up inside a Salvadoran prison — separated from his wife and 6-year-old daughter — if he didn’t.
I want to be clear I am not defending this but just trying to provide the likely reasoning the Trump Admin is using. I also know some folks in South Africa and have a bit of familiarity with the country. The individual in the WaPost article appears to be part of a large group of people affected by the Trump Admin decision to revoke a Biden Admin program. Reading the OP's article, it appears the Trump Admin set up a different EO for South Africans.
