Vlad in his own words (link in my previous post)
Russian President Vladimir Putin told the nation Monday that the collapse of the Soviet empire “was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century” and had fostered separatist movements inside Russia.

In his annual state of the nation address to parliament and the country’s top political leaders, Putin said the Soviet collapse also was a tragedy for Russians.

“First and foremost it is worth acknowledging that the demise of the Soviet Union was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century,” Putin said. “As for the Russian people, it became a genuine tragedy. Tens of millions of our fellow citizens and countrymen found themselves beyond the fringes of Russian territory.

How many times do Have to debunk this? That's not exactly what Putin said. Obviously WW2 was a bigger tragedy for Russians in that 23 million or so Russians died because of that conflict.

The tragedy that Putin referred to was that 60-75% of the Russian people were thrown into poverty. Oligarchs raped the people essentially. Supply chains ended up in 15 other countries. Roughly 25M Russians were left behind in other countries and often became persecuted minorities.

Putin never used the word "greatest." That was a mistranslation. Putin has no intention of reconstituting the USSR as many geopolitical analysts have tried to explain. That includes Stephen F. Cohen (RIP) and John Mearsheimer.
