The President is saying children will have lower quality of life due to tarrifs because he thinks that they should. So the boomers got to take the spoils and run up the national debt, making the next generations suffer degraded quality of life.

I actually agree with him. The generations below the boomers are going to have tough times because of the reckless spending. My problem, is he is doing nothing to actually help address this. Instead, he is degrading our ability to innovate and create in America with tariffs, which are proven to hurt the economy.

 

The problem with this is your elimination of choice from the equation. You assume that legal allowance of something is the same as wanting a choice to be made. Also, you assume that people who make different choices than you would prefer have been "brainwashed." Finally, you assume that people shouldn't get to choose the products that they buy.

You appear to oppose people making choices. You want to dictate their choices for them.

What fundamentally is a tariff? A tariff is a government getting between the individual/business and their ability to buy an imported product in a free market arrangement.

There may some some limited number of items where this makes sense (national security, health/biosecurity, whatever). Now let’s hear from a “small government conservative” why a government needs to dictate the trading of toys or textiles. Keep in mind these people are adamently opposed to the govt doing things like imposing safety standards, testing of chemicals, environmental/pollution standards because regulations are bad for business. But ask them about govt imposing 145% tariffs to block business activity entirely… makes total sense! NOT!

 

Easy, to prevent China from using knowledge and technology they didn't develop against American businesses. American business can not compete because they play fair against competition that does not. China and Chinese companies steal American technology and then use it against us. Those Chinese companies don't have to pay licensing fees or R&D costs like American companies do.

Also, China is able to use slave labor or darn near slave labor (pennies on the dollar for a whole day). How are American companies supposed to compete against that?

Never thought I would see the day that Democrats would support using slaves and slave labor. Oh actually, I did, Democrats have done it their entire existence going back to the Civil War and the 1800's. They've just slightly changed who they want to be slaves and outsourced a lot of the slave labor.

Trump's remark on the number of dolls parents may give to their children on Christmas brings to mind Marie Antoinette's statement "let them eat cake" which by the way may or may not be an accurate quote. Although not the least bit atypical of Trump it's another reflection of the Donald's lack of empathy. He has no concept that some parents actually have to make financial sacrifices to purchase Christmas gifts for the children and that his tariffs will almost certainly increase the burden on them considering that approximately 80% of the toys sold in the US are manufactured in China.
