Importer pays the tariff to the government, cost gets passed along to the next the company/person in the chain until the ultimate consumer pays a higher price. Do you believe like our president that foreign governments are paying the tariff directly to our government?

 

The importer pays the tariff. The importer, being an American person or business, passes that cost increase onto you.

You may grasp onto reports that some importers will “eat the costs” of tariffs and NOT pass this cost to you, and some large corps may do that for a time if they have the cash flows to hold out. Have also heard many reports of “channel stuffing” as much as possible to get ahead of tariffs. These are both temporary measures to get them through a few quarters. But at the end of the day either tariffs must go away or the economic harm will be seen in numbers.

Trade barriers are failed leftist policy, and when those policies cause inflation you often see these dictators come in with “price controls” as the follow up. There is no universe where large scale tariffs and trade barriers are effective economic policy relative to free trade. It’s “been there, done that” failed policy documented by history and Econ 101.

 

When you make a purchase of an imported product the tariffs are reflected in the final price. One question: If tariffs are paid by the exporting country why did MAGA Barbie aka Karoline Leavitt go ballistic when Amazon proposed listing the amount of tariffs on its website?
