This proposed rule insufficient as it would allow my and other poster’s factual but unflattering threads re dear leader.

Actually I’ve seen quite a few article titles that aren’t accurate and aren’t even an accurate depiction of the article in question.

So to be clear, you are now moderating content for accuracy?

I guarantee that it will not be even-handed simply because even-handededness in the application of unwritten rules around perceptions is impossible. And you will always weigh what is and isn't an insult. Even if you break it down like you did there, to a dichotomy, there will need to be an estimation of what is too far and what isn't.

This is why moderation should arise not merely from perceptions of something so ephemeral as "tone" and should be based upon a written set of rules.

We get a "tone" check occasionally around here. Name calling was off the charts during the Obama administration and 20 days into Trump 1.0 it became a new rule that derogatory name calling was off the table. It relaxed under Biden. Now its titles. It's just coincidence who is in office. Its just a response to the environment. o_O

Yeah we get Joey this Joey that - Waltz is an SOB racialized versions of “Kamala- vaccines are fake, covid is fske, viruses are fake, 2020’election was fake - Putin is great, you name it - then when Trump comes in and quite literally destroys the country - “let’s take a look at the tone here”.

Guys, as I explained at the time, I was the instigator behind the no nicknames in thread titles rule. And it's obviously not because I'm soft on Trump. Some nicknames were clever and funny, some were just stupid and immature.
The rule was an attempt to encourage - at least in the title - a reasonable conversation rather than starting a thread with silliness.

And, by the way, yes ... insults flew much harder and heavier during the Obama administration. Both toward politicians and toward other posters. Rules were tightened a good bit before Trump took office.

I will say that I regularly state the advantages of moderated discussion boards and that I approve of moderation policies generally. I have no problem with the no-nicknames rule. The nicknames do nothing in terms of discussion. But the notion that people should have their posts moderated even when they have not violated a single rule based upon some amorphous problem with "tone" is obviously nonsense.

Agree. I have no problem with the nicknames rule. It’s the randomly editing thread titles and posts with no rule violation, meanwhile allowing a different moderator to spam the board with troll posts a mere couple of weeks ago.

I used to be on Gatorchatter and it was the Wild West over there. After seeing their posts right after January 6 I left and never returned. My point is good luck striking a balance between uncontrolled chaos and overcontrolled peace (yes I just created a new word).

Same. I was run out of town over there some years before you said you left. It was pretty much no rules, except what happened to upset the board owner, which was pretty much any non MAGA opinion, anything resembling orange and blue goggles football posting, and anything that was critical of him in the least.

I see name calling all over with both Admins.

    Granted I haven’t done a hard count.

Okay, so I think it is time to revisit the "even-handed" claim here. As a reminder, the thread title "Trump Deports US Citizen Child with Cancer" was viewed as not having an appropriate tone and the thread title was changed. Now, we have a thread from a moderator in which he changed the title of the article linked and entitled the thread about transgendered people playing sports in Oregon into "Blue States Still Allowing Boys to Compete as Girls." This has been allowed to stand since yesterday with no enforced title change. Can you provide me with some insight into why the tone of that thread title is appropriate while stating, factually, that the Trump administration had deported a US Citizen with cancer is not appropriately toned? I would like to understand how you have even-handedly made this determination. Thank you for your attention to the matter of board tone.

I modded Dawgpost for many years (Tilly knew me back then). I got heavy-handed and starting editing posts and it’s a tough time to not let your personal preferences color your judgement. Maybe you’ll be better than I was but I’ll wait to see based on some of the stuff posted by those in “power.” Good luck.

Why does it even matter. Just flow the rules as they arise.

Thanks but no problem. I changed it once I knew about it, like I changed the two some shrieked about. A fair question this time . . . but the "Report" button can be used instead of calling me out on the forum.
